The units are good for 7 years or so, if you get a new one and are going to keep the car for longer then 7 years ,after the first 12 months cut the unit open and do as you wish when the guaranteed is expired.
But a couple of people have had problems when the unit is left in place with the fault it's shorts a unit out.

The module is part of the distributed 'intelligence' of Volvos via Canbus. If you replace it with say a simple siren then nothing will communicate with it (sensors) unless you install a complete new system and neither will you be able to disable the internal sensors when you have either kids of animals in the car but still want to lock it.

How do I know? I've tried!

I've now bitten the bullet and bought a new module because 2nd hand ones that are repairable are rarer than rocking horse poo. I initially thought I'd break it open and mount an external battery, but then I realised there was no point. First I'd invalidate the warranty of a brand new item, and second I realise that as soon as you get the Alarm system service required you have quite a while to disassemble it and mount your external battery. Why do it immediately when you are simply making work for yourself and potentially costing yourself a load more money?!?

Just my two penneth...

As for the alarm siren module, I've removed mine, the code comes up sometimes but the alarm light still operates and i'm not paying @ £150 for a fix
