I can only go on what the previous owner told me (that the AWD system wasn't working during the first lot of snow, and that they had it repaired by a Volvo Dealers)....We've only had her a couple of weeks.
I'll have a look through the receipts when I get home tonight.

So all We've got to worry about are the potential Gearbox problems?
Might have been a problem with the Haldex box. Happens occasionally.

At least the gearbox can be fixed permenantly with the uprated parts now.

Cheers Roy
I've just added to my post... The previous owners told me the AWD was found to be faulty in the Snow a couple of years back (they had owned it since new) and that they had it repaired by a Volvo Dealers, I wrongly assumed they were referring to the Sleeve.
I'll have a look through the receipts when I get home tonight.

while I've got you, Is it possible to repair the flip out key-fob? the key swivels freely and locks in the "out" position but won't lock in the "closed" position at all..the little silver button doesn't feel like it is engaging....I've given it a good spray with WD40 but made no difference.

I think I might have to buy a new key, I imagine that will "sting" a bit.

I don't know if it's possible to dismantle the flip out keys. I have the seperate key and fob. I do know it costs approx £120 for a new flip out key and programming.

I believe it is possible to swap the internals if you can get a 2nd hand key (saves a lot of ££)
Edit: quick search on Ebay, there are at least 5 for approx £20-£25.

You need to swap the internals as keys cannot be programmed to the car as stated in some adverts...

Hello, just joined the forum after buying a 2004 V70 D5 AWD auto.

Found this thread really interesting, mines done 140k with FSH, having bought it from my brother and knowing the first owner (since new), its been looked after.

However, I thought the AWD system would be working, but after reading this I'd like to confirm it. We're lacking some snow and ice at the moment, is there any way to check it's working? I've read that if you can turn the prop shaft, its not working, can you do this with an auto??

Many thanks

Matt

Find yourself a muddy field or grass verge close to tarmac. Park two wheels on the tarmac and two on the grass and give it some welly.....

Ensure that the oil is changed every 48k, use Dexron III or GM Dexron VI.

Beware if the box does fail its a £5300 job at Volvo and VCUK will frig you off if over it. The cost of the box alone from Volvo is £3300 and takes anything from two to three weeks to appear.

I've had the unfortunate experience of this happening on my 72k T6.

Do not use Dexron III in the transmission on the D5

If you search the forum you will find plenty of posts on the auto gearbox oil, it must be JS3309 Specification.

If you mean the oil in the bevel gear this must be Volvo part number 1161648 (SAE 75W90)
