Pictures attached.

The faulty chip was labelled CPU1 on mine, I got no further than this as those pins are small and my soldering skills are extremely rusty, looking at sending mine off least then it has a warranty

OK so I have a mate who is auto electrician and a whizz kid electronic engineer radio ham etc. who said he would do it for me . .

My Fault started about 2 week ago it's the. . .DIM. . MPG read out . . miles left in tank . . bulb out etc

mine works then a few miles down the road it's off so I don't know what MPG I'm getting but also noted it goes off when the heater is on car is warm . . hmmm heat sink may be needed ?

Any way

There is a problem he says since people went to LEAD FREE solder and this is the problem its the ROSH compliance . . or going green via lead free But alas the Lead makes a better job hence NASA still use Lead solder so if your Car or Laptop and TV all start playing up . . then this could be the fault

So I have scanned all the forums (all the web ) on Volvo Clusters and posts regards this R46 and the chip ?

So I think I got this right we just re-solder the pins on both items or do we replace the little R46 and can any one via the Vice / dice. or what ever there called tell me what R46 is so I could replace this with a new one if needed

Thanks Guys

Thumbs up Can't see the pictures.

Really useful posting - thanks. However, I couldn't at first see the pictures for some reason. They were there before I registered and logged in but I can't see them now in the original posting but there are some more later. Not sure if they are the same though.

I'm working on the DIM from an XC90. One small change to the dismantle process. Had to pull the pointers off the instruments before I could get the boards out. That meant taking the screen and the black instrument panel off. Pulling the pointers took more strength that I was comfortable with but they all gave in in the end.

Now wondering whether to use a fine point soldering iron or get a hot air solder tool.

Again, thanks for the really useful information.

If it's the left lower corner display that's acting up, just search for the black chip where you see that some of the printed circuit board connections go towards the display module.

But I warn you, I messed up my instrument panel trying to fix this.

The chip has thin legs. It's impossible to see which legs have a broken contact so you need to heat up all the side where there are connections going to the display. You absolutely need an excellent soldering iron with a perfect tip - forget about the cheapo irons sold in hardware stores, soldering flux, a good magnifying glass and a very steady hand. Otherwise, you will solder two chip legs together and all your instrument panel will be busted.

see the way is done here

Carefull when putting back the circuit board back on the white casing. Go slowly and check all spring pins insert properly.

Wow, what a video!
I think I'd be able to master soldering skills like that in around 100 years
