Wind direction probably changed.

The media love refering to the government test figures as 'claimed mpg'. They are nothing of the sort and should be used for comparison only. We know that car manufacturers do what they can to achieve the best possible test figures, but that is exactly what the consumer should be wanting to them to do because it reduces the VED and/or company car tax rates. Would they prefer that the test figures matched the real word mpg/CO2 emissions and that we all paid more in tax?

@turnwood, you as a fellow dieselhead may know this difference, but unfortunately the other 99.9% of the population believe that the figures represent the MPG that they should expect from the car.

I firmly believe that the industry should be made to order revise realistic figures and have held to account when the car does not return the advertised figure.

That will simply result in us paying more tax!

I think if we apply the same percentage we purchasers get off list price +10% to MPG claims, then we are somewhere in the realms of reality..!!

Also there is no way to say what true MPG is. Every driver will have a different mpg. so how can any manufacture quote one that will be true for every driver in all conditions.?

So we have the standard test that all cars are measured against.

True the manufacturers produce cars that are designed to give the best results in that test. That does not work against the consumer though, it keeps our tax lower.

Look in any walk of life and you will see examples of the world doing exactly what the car manufactures do. Exam results, computer speed tests, bank bonuses, offshore accounts, MP's additional jobs, etc. I sure you could all come up with your own lists.

I'm wondering if I have a problem. I've still been driving pretty sensibly, actually very sensibly! I did a very gentle 40 mile trip yesterday on dual carriageway, kept to between 50-55 mph, empty car, nice conditions and got 36mpg both ways. Doesn't seem right judged on everybody else's comments on this thread. Also around town I am now getting 29.

My D5 AWD Geartronic would be about 42 mpg in those conditions and I've only got 800 miles on the clock. Can't be right.

I have only had 3 fill-ups from new (November 2014), and they have been 38.9; 39.1; 39.1 - measured by neck to neck fills -so pretty consistent consumption!

I don't have a heavy right foot, and most of my journeys are relatively short a and B roads. - I am relatively pleased with this consumption, bearing in mind that winter months always increase consumption.

Your mpg doesn't look good, Swishy - perhaps you should take it to your dealer to see if there is an inherent problem.
