The option to set up a pin code on the Sensus screen wouldn't need a phone connection, so it seems a simple additional security step.

I like morgano's idea of an option within Sensus to require an additional PIN - a bit like a Valet setting. Agree that reliance on a smartphone might be frustrating on occasion. The idea of disabling the car if the key is out-of-range would need careful implementation - you don't want your car suddenly shutting down if the key becomes screened for some reason (especially if it happens just as you turn across the path of an oncoming artic...). Better might be for the car to go into limp-mode and be restricted to slow speed with hazards on, or something.

Agreed. This would be a simple and effective solution, particularly as a PIN-code entry screen is already present in Sensus for the Private Locking function. (It locks out after 3 unsuccessful attempts then needs a PUK code to reset it.)

I had a factory installed PIN pad on my 1995 Peugeot 306 XSi back in the day!!

Ahead of its time!

As posted on the thread before 3rd pin systems are already available but you will find that most of the solutions are already patented and that means Volvo would have to pay to use someone else’s solution. The patent holder will also have to allow them to use it, many are other car companies that would rather see their competitors cars stolen and watch their own sales improve.

They could put it as another paid for option rather like iPhone/Android integration is?

Strange as I always believed that Insurers gave additional discount if your car was parked overnight in a locked garage v being left outside in full view of "perps"!

Do you have the data to validate this statement?
I'd like to know which insurers think this way.

Admiral certainly did when I was running through options, parked in garage saw a rise in premium. Likely due to claims from people who have scrapes getting into ever tighter garages.
