If you're doing such a top job on inside of wings/underbody, then the topcoat I'm sure will make us all rather jealous....😀

Sounds like your workshop is now nearing self contained accommodation, and must be very rare to have those facilities in a city.

Cheers
Steve

Been a faf this week. Thought I'd try paint stripper for the boot lid and bonnet but didn't work so stripped the bonnet only to find some holes at the front bottom. It's a good bit of effort to strip them so was a bit annoyed. Got the 69 spare bonnet looked okay so stripped it. Has some surface rust and pitting on the underside front so sanded it then treating and scrubbing with deox gel to remove. Left covered in plastic for a couple of days. Then onto the boot lid, stripped it only to find a few wee holes along the inside edge. So pulled out the spare boot lid, had a wee gander and looks okay. We're away for the weekend so will strip the boot lid when home. So dusty at the moment. Going to go to town painting the hard to get areas so hopefully no issues in future.

was doing some r&r up at our cottage this weekend and thinking about the bonnets. Not happy with myself and felt I was cutting corners so this afternoon I took the front panels off both of the bonnets. Neither front panel was painted underneath from new by the looks and the spare one has no holes. The original bonnet is virtually rust free on the bonnet so am going to fit the spare bonnet panel to the original bonnet. I don't have a long enough container to derust the panel in so covered it with deox gel and wrapped in cling film. Will give it a few days to work its magic.

Finally got the time to get the bonnet back together and in epoxy primer. Still need to get epoxy in the seams and right in the front area.

I started sanding the bonnet down for it's second layer of epoxy but didn't have much time. Will continue on the weekend.

Well things went a bit pear shape with the epoxy today. Couple of rookie errors so will have some sanding practice.

For us mere mortals, any idea as to the cause of the paint issues?? from what I can make out on photos there seems to be just a few pinholes..

Cheers

Solvent pop. Will have to sand it back and do it again.

Hi Mitch,

Errrrrr??? until Google came to the rescue, from PPG apparently.

"What causes paint to solvent pop?
Poor quality or too fast thinner. Excessive film thickness, or insufficient drying time between coats. Compressed air pressure too low. Drying temperature too high, heat source too close to the film, too hot, or applied too soon."

Oh, well that narrows the problem to many variables, and just reinforces the 'witchcraft' of sprayers.

As someone who's only ever used rattle cans, I'd be very tempted to just fill the holes and hope top coat will sort it, but then I know deep down that it would haunt me that it's not 'right', oh this restoration malarkey is a minefield, just depends where one draws the line.

Your perseverance on this and not accepting anything less than perfection is admiral, and can't wait to see the old girl 'fully dressed' with all panels on in the top coat.

Cheers
Steve
