Over on the US XC90 forum there are reports of T8's driving well in snow; presumably with winter tyres though.

On the test I saw in the Rockies with deep snow it went pretty well on the summer tyres. Guy said it would be even better if it had proper snow tyres on it.

Hi Philip - taking my t8 to the alps over Christmas and struggling to find suitable chains. What chains did you use in the end and how was it in the snow?
Thanks James |

Snow chains "Centrax snow chains"
A snow chain specially developed for several tyre dimensions. This type of snow chain has the advantage of not being fitted on the inside of the tyre and so does not take up the space required by larger tyres. http://accessories.volvocars.com/en-...18/all/all/all So at least 18" and 19" wheels can be chained.

These chains are as I have found only available from Volvo (Centrax link above) and costs more than 10 times the chains I've used on my previous VW, that worked great the only day I actually needed it (or at least felt like I needed and put on) in five year. So I'm a bit reluctant to pay >4KSEK (>300£) for something I might never use. And the risk is that I will not buy it before I've got stuck at least once. Have never tested the socks but I suspect that chains are very much better in snow and also works if stuck in e.g. mud/sand, on the other hand the socks probably are very compact. Some value alternative is most welcome. Last edited by xc902018; Dec 10th, 2017 at 09:48. |

I agree with what you write abou the cost of these chains. They look a lot like these Thule chains:
https://www.thule.com.au/products/sn...it-k11-to-k23/ They are very expensive as well... I do like the design of the Centrax chains, I amagine they are easy to place and remove. Perhaps other manufacturers will soon produce more affordable chains of the same design. I have heard a lot of bad things about socks and spiders. I hear they are ruined after a wheel spin.

I can remember reading somewhere that Volvo snow chains are of a specific type that are clamped on the outside of the wheels because of the clearance issues.
I would be very surprised if there is not a thread on here somewhere about this.

Iirc, Volvo say that on an XC90 you cannot fit chains on wheels larger than 19".

Outside diameters of the available wheel/tyre combinations for the XC90 are all approximately
the same, so why would it matter how tall the wheels are if the chains do not reach te inside of the wheel well? Perhaps the mounting device will extend to far to the outside of the well to be still allowed? There seem to be somewhat less expensive chains of this design: https://www.snowchainstore.co.uk/maggi-trak-4x4-lt51 http://www.maggigroup.com/pdf/gb_LR.pdf

It's because the tyres on the 20" (and above) wheels are 4 cm wider.
