Relays....
As has been mentioned....if its starting up again after having been left to cool a little then I'd be 99% that its the either the fuel pump relay(White one behind the fuses) Or Radio suppression relay.....Both suffer over time from cracks in the soldering on the relays circuit board.... Easy to reflow/resolder all dodgy looking joints...

How is this progressing Andrew? Does your car have the On Board Diagnostic box mounted on the nearside front inner wing just in front of the suspension turret and if so have you interrogated it? When I was new to the 940 and this forum I was a bit lost. I've had symptoms similar to yours. I've since replaced the MAF sensor, Fuel Pump Relay, Radio Suppression Relay and the Crank Position Sensor. (In that order) They are all relatively easy jobs but knowing which one to try first is a problem. Each one cured the problem for a while until the next one caused problems.
