The camera is plain to see in the windscreen and they tend to look for them.

Just a point I found out last week, SD cards have a rewrite limit and die quickly after that limit is reached.
Believe the figure quoted was 10,000 times but as I currently use nothing with an SD card it was rather academic at the time. Information came from a well qualified mate who's day job is running and maintaining it systems when a SD card we were using in a rasbury pi controlled radio interface just up and died after 5 mins. There is indeed a rewrite life to all memory cards (typically 100,000 times not 10,000
![]() Also if the camera calls for a Class 10 card, then pay the extra and get a Class 10 - this stipulates how quickly data can be written to the memory card, and while you can sometimes get away with using a lesser card, you run the risk of the data being corrupted as it simply can't be written (recorded) fast enough.

Yes it took about half an hour and that was to hard wire it in. if you use the fag lighter adaptor it a 2 min job.

Hi,
Just to let you know that a number of out=r insurance schemes do offer discounts for certain approved in-car cameras. Regards, Dan. |

why do they have to be approved , what is the criteria ? Surely one is much like another and it is the video evidence which matters not what it was filmed on .. unless you mean that it has to be fitted properly and professionaly to ensure it records EVERY Trip . I can imagine a discount being given and then when the accident happens the camera wasnt on ..

Indeed! I enquired about the exact requirements when I first fitted my camera - the response was 'I'm not 100% sure, I'll find out and call you back'. Of course I never did get that returned call...
My experience is that an insurer will try anything to get out of paying, so the best policy (sic) when fitting a dashcam - and getting an insurance discount because of it - is to hard wire it so that it is on whenever the ignition is on. Treat it like any other security device (immobiliser, tracker, alarm etc) - if its not enabled when an incident occurs, you'll be on your own and up to your armpits in the cesspool.

Hi, The main reason is a lot of cameras don't have GPS locations, date/time stamps etc (I appreciate many do, but having an approved list for discounts ensures those once have the relevant features.) Obviously having any camera is beneficial & I would always recommend notifying us/insurers of the fact a camera is fitted as they may give a discount if possible. In the event of a claim if you have video evidence then this is always going to be a benefit! It's just as an insurance broker, we have to go by the insurers approved cameras to give certain discounts. Regards Dan |

Is there a publicly available list of approved units? I've been considering upgrading mine and would appreciate some guidance in case I can save a few pennies off my premium.
