If it has been pinned in the retracted position and you have the key in and car running, even if the fix failed the lock lug cannot descend because the key prevents it.

If I was the OP I would ignore the video that I posted and follow your advice buying a new assembly for peace of mind.
In the meantime I will put up with the daily risk of my modified barrel killing everyone in the vicinity.👍
I agree with you but for the cost of doing it properly is it worth your life potentially.

We had something like this where the key would not turn beyond a certain point. It seems there is a metal lug that breaks free and jams the mechanism. With careful use of oil and repeated insertions of the key it can be maneuvered out of the way without recourse to removing the ignition switch etc. Ours has worked for two years since it jammed.

In life each has to make their own decisions.

I made mine and the OP can decide for himself just as you can.

I will say this for the last time, under normal circumstances, with the key in and fully turned so that the car is running the lock lug is automatically prevented by the manufacturer from falling by the presence of the key.
When the key is withdrawn the lock lug is free to fall into place and lock the steering as expected and designed.

The video clearly explains that if the modification was to fail ( highly unlikely ) the lock lug will have no bearing on safety as it cannot fall until the key is withdrawn and at that point you are back to where you started with the original issue.

OP, if I were you I would totally disregard the assistance that I attempted to offer. It is far too much of a risk and the guy that did the video is clearly an idiot.
Remember that you will still have to follow his initial guidance with regards to removing the old assembly when installing your new barrel so nothing lost there.

I believe that a new barrel is only £300 or so to purchase which makes far more sense than the modification outlined.

Good luck as always.👍

Very common issue Joe ,

My fix is permanent and has been fine for over 3 years.

Poor quality really on a relatively expensive car.

Once sorted, I'd be interested to hear how you got on with this issue and which path you eventually took.👍

I think my WD40 and a key wiggle has been working for 10 years now......I've only killed 237 souls so far so probably worth it!?
As has been stated I believe the design 'fails-safe' ie just because it wont turn when trying to start the car doesn't mean it's gonna lock up on you while driving.

As car designers who are literally at the cutting edge of car safety and always have been I'd be extremely surprised if Volvo accepted a design where that would be even remotely possible

With rover on the other hand it's surprising they didn't literally fall apart as they came off the production line lol

Had another go at it this afternoon, silicon spray, much shaking the wheel, metal plate prised… Nothing doing, removed the starter unit from the end of the barrel, nothing.
Key will not go anywhere, including position 1.
Having owned 24 Alfa’s I am quite good with tools, ingenious even.
I have watched the video with the cotter pin, no way can the lock fall, it would take a hell of a punch from behind to drop it, nothing in there is capable of that.
I still don’t know what to do though, on the one hand it is an under 100k, manual 2006 xc70 which drive well and just passed an mot, on the other hand it is constantly challenging me with silly electrical things and previous owner not having a clue.

A manual xc70 with under 100k is to my mind worth the effort as it is such a complete package.

I had a 2005 XC70 before the XC90 and in many respects I think that the XC70 is a superior build quality particularly the seats.
I sold mine at just sort of 190k and it was still running superbly.

I'm sure you will get it sorted. When mine faled I did not attempt prising the bottom plate off I just went straight for the fix in the video.

I had no warning that the lock was about to fail.
Fine when I parked up one night and buggered the next morning.
