They just replace a solid non adjusting bar thats already there to separate the shoes. No drilling needed.

Half of the problem with the rear handbrake shoes is after market parts are not the correct shape. Volvo shoes have a flat top to them, with no loss of brake material across it (Same thickness). After market parts are round and they just don't fit, to jam the handbrake on. Ive experienced this issue having bought aftermarket shoes.

If it fails on this, check the shape of the shoes and for £40, replace them with the right part from Volvo.

Adjustment is done by clicking the star wheel round by using a small screwdriver through one of the wheel stud holes; it's easy once you know what you are doing!

My MOT looms and I'm sure it will fail on handbrake...
From memory I think they were used on early S60 models, they fit straight on to XC90 by replacing the solid 'H' shaped bar between the shoes.

Adjust them by simply using a screwdriver blade through one of the wheel bolt holes until the shoes just touch the drum, then back off slightly. Carry out final adjustment on the cable inside the car (adjacent to nearside transmission tunnel) and you'll have a very efficient handbrake.

I did this conversion on mine 3 years ago and it still holds the car (with caravan attached) on four clicks of the pedal!

You would be mad to sell her Spudd. After purchase I spent a further 4k fixing issues like rear parking sensors, AWD, CEM, windscreen washer, alarm module replacement, ATF full flush (all in the first year), then a minor idling issue (very recent). This is a one owner, low mileage vehicle with a FVSH! I have even had the leather interior and exterior bodywork (some scratches) repaired. I often thought the same as you, but the next owner would get an incredible bargain - unless they are prepared to pay above market rate for the vehicle. This is the problem with buying and selling used cars. People look at the average price on the high street and think that is what they should pay, even though one vehicle may be 30 or 40% newer in terms of parts than another the same age. You have spent a load on this car and it should be good for a while now. You would probably just buy a used Disco that would be far less reliable than your last experience (hopefully not the same colour as the one in your profile ). At least you know what has been done to this car.

I echo Acers comments Spudd. After all that you've spent on it, you may buy anther donkey, and regret it.

Anyway, After the drive, you'll fall back in love...

Default Glad to hear you're enjoying driving the car again

So pleased you're enjoying driving your car again. I'm sure she drives like a brand new car. I need to change the inner and outer track rods on ours soon. I'm hoping the repairs will re-kindle my love affair with my XC90 again.

Nah, the adjustment lines up with a wheel lug hole.

There was a guide on here, but all the pictures disappeared. I'll see if I still have a .pdf with it all in (I printed it all and handed to my mechanic when MOT time came as I knew he'd end up having to fettle it)
