Anyone worried is best advised to contact their dealer now for the correct service interval of their aux belt/tensioner .
Anyone who has proper dealer servicing need not worry .. !

Another point , cambelts were always changed on the 108000/6 year service , whatever the mileage ,
Now if the car has a 108000 cambelt service and the mileage is less than 108000 miles which is often the case then it isnt changed . So you need to be on top of this , i can see cam belts being forgotton if the car is serviced outside the dealers and if the car changes ownership ! so much for cost cutting and keeping service bills down .. Cambelts are very robust though , in most case it is the Aux belt/tensioner which causes the problem ..
Very true Clan although even with main dealer servicing it is still a case of caveat emptor. My car was sold to me from a Main Volvo Dealer on the Selekt scheme, as being serviced with the cambelt being done. Only my distrust of this particular dealer and anal attention to detail meant that I was able to confirm that ONLY the cambelt had been done! They did not do the Aux belt and tensioner or A/C belt. Had I not questioned it, I would probably be spending £4-5000 on a new engine about now!

good for you in chasing it up , If the engine had gone later , you would have to get lawyers involved and prove the job was only half done i guess , parts do have a date code .
It is always a good idea to get a copy of the work invoice of work done even when the company are paying for it .

Yeah, I got the invoice which stated cambelt kit. They had to check the part numbers to confirm that the kit only consisted of 3 items, the cambelt, the tensioner and 1 other item. I think to be honest, unless you have a detailed service invoice with all the relevant parts used then always get it changed just in case!

a big thanks to clan and tt82 for the extremely helpful posts and ones since my last post.

I am a big believer in keeping as much info as poss about any work done to any vehicle I own.
If you know what has been done and you know what needs doing it is your own fault if you don't get it done.

When I sold my 940 I was able to pass on a copy of every bill for parts service MOT sheets etc. for the 18 years I had owned it.

I am particularly wary of tensioner renewal as a result of an incident in 2003
With the 940 I was waiting at end of my drive to draw into traffic when I heard a funny noise so I stopped engine immediately. On inspection I found that the cam belt had come off, the tensioner had lost its plastic coating and released the belt.
Made a few phone calls and found it was usually an engine right off with this particular engine, valves hit pistons.

pushed car into my garage, rang my usual mechanic who was unable to do anything for at least 3 weeks he was so busy.
fortunately a friend in the RAF was on leave (he happened to be a diesel engine/jet engine instructer).
NO problems he said get parts from Volvo and we'll have head off and do what needs doing.
because I had stopped engine so quickly all valves etc were perfect.
stripped engine down cleaned and reset everything, he tested head and block surfaces ...did not need to go away to be planed.
fitted new timing belt, diesel pump belt, tensioner and bottom pulley. ground the valves just in case.
when he had finished rebuilding and timing everything it ran smoother and quieter than when it was new.
I was a friend in need with a good friend indeed.
As the replacement pulley had a metal outer, not a plastic one
I took damaged tensioner and plastic bits to Volvo spares dept to show tham and ask if this was a known problem.
Never heard of that before. was reply.
I found out months later that this was a particular problem with th VW diesel engine.
