Well i used a "Death" Kit if you will call it as such, however I also bought a pressure gauge and therefore was able to read off the pressure in the system (abour 22-23psi). After adding a can of 134a i found that it now reads about 40psi (within Volvo's prescribed limits) and it works well

So whilst i see your point, and understand you wishing to explain why you can do a better job, i do feel that with the gauge as well there is less risk of blowing the system up.

The server went down for 5 hours. It's in Germany so they may be anticipating a crushing defeat in the World Cup and are making us pay already.

Just a quickie on leak sealers. Some of the Death Kits include a leak sealer. May work or may not depending on the size of the leak hole. Problem is what happens to the rest of the leak sealer after it's plugged a quarter millimetre hole ?? That's right it floats around the a/c system having fun.

Default AC in old cars.

I think I prefer the AC in my old 240------------Sunroof and the windows down!.
I love the AC in my new car, but it looks to be a pit for money once the warranty is out, and more than a few years old.

A\C sealers should only be used on a fully evacuated system as they react to moisture, so yes on a DIY kit it may not be the best idea. Regards floating around, yes they will float around and get used when needed.

Here's an actual occurence from a recent service job on another Swedish car.

First thing that I do is check to see if there is any gas in the system, in this case there was apparantly none at the low side service connector, not a squirt, not a smidgen. So I started to do a recovery to empty the system of whatever was in it...200 grams of refrigerant comes out...400...600...800...1000...1200...1500. Yup 1500 grams of gas came out, double the required amount. The owner admitted using a DIY kit when I asked him about the dye in the service port cos it was an odd colour. So he says whats wrong with it then. I'll let you know in about one and a half hours says I.

One and half hours later the system is working perfectly after having all the moisture and crud taken out. Excess moisture in the receiver dryer was blocking the passage of the gas. He really needed a new receiver/dryer but he didn't want to spend the dosh, so now the system is working well and actually got down to 1.5 degrees C.

The moral of the story ? Don't trust pressure gauges when testing for the presence of refrigerant especially if you are about to perform surgery on the system.
