Well, it's all back together - minus the droplink, anyways
I ended up removing the droplink ends by first of all Dremeling off the rusted protruding thread (to minimise the resistance), then whipping off the nut with the rattle gun - holding the 'back end' with some Mole grips. Shame it's not particularly non-destructive! The spring seat was, er, quite worn - see photos. It did look like the original Volvo item, but the symptoms must have been present for some time! I'll tackle the other side after the MoT tester has done his worst seat1.jpg seat2.jpg seat3.jpg
