My XC60 is one year old and during that time the tailgate has stopped halfway on two occasions (months apart). Nothing I have then tried persuades it to shift electrically. On the most recent episode the Volvo recovery people were very quick and helpful but closed it using force and told me it needed a 'new component' (unspecified). When the dealer examined it it worked perfectly (and has done since).
Is it OK to force it closed manually or will it damage the mechanism?

I have had to "force it closed" a couple of times when I have moved the car with the tailgate open. Doesn't seem to harm it at all.

I managed to accidentally open my tailgate last winter with the car in the garage. I had the key in my pocket while bent down thawing out the garage door lock. Then the up & over door wouldn't open as the tailgate was jamming it! No scratches or damage though. So it is possible if you are careless enough!
