Exactly ! There are far too many 900 handbrakes these days which never get cleaned, adjusted or maintained ... they are the equal of the 240 handbrake .

It’s definitely an area of maintenance which I need to get stuck into. My petrol 940 has a decent handbrake and my wife’s 740’s handbrake is the best of the three, there is definitely room for improvement with the derv, though.

If it passes the MOT, as soon as my busted ankle is fully healed I’ll get in into the air and change the cables and shoes.

the drums could be rusty too as our cars haven't been used much over the last 2 years ...

Well, it failed but not on too much…a binding OSF brake (due to several weeks of being parked up following me busting my ankle), a worn D bush on the front ARB and the handbrake being inoperative on the near side.

All stuff I can sort out, I’ve got new ARB bushes on the way for early next week. Not sure why the handbrake isn’t working on one side, but will find out!

Cable has probably gone on one side

The clevis pin may have fallen out as well. The right hand part of the cable is separate so it's probably that. You will need to go to a dealer as Euro etc don't have a clue

All in all Phil, not a bad fail. I'd suggest renewing both D bushes (and the drop links too) on the front ARB or the other D bush will fail fairly quickly.

Check your A frame on the back axle where the long LH cable passes through it, sometimes if it sticks or has come adrift, it will operate one side of the handbrake (usually right or OS) and not the other. Could also be the adjuster needs tightening and a general clean up/lube of the moving parts.
Similar for the front i suspect.

So the embuggerance continues…I got the car back today and fitted new rear discs, pads and handbrake shoes (the nearside shoes were metal on metal!), new front pads and cleaned up and greased all the slide pins. The top NS slide pin was rusted stuck so took a bit of finagling, but I got it all working as it should. Changed both D bushes also, which was far simpler than expected!

I took the car back for a retest and it somehow failed on MORE than it did the first time around!

According to the tester the NSF brake is still binding and the handbrake is still not functioning as it should (despite it now being capable of holding the car on a 3:1 hill!) and the handbrake lever apparently now has too much travel (despite having exactly the same amount of travel as before, holding the car with the lever halfway up).

I have to admit I have my doubts about the tester, especially after removing and replacing two ARB D bushes that were deemed a failure, whilst in virtually identical condition to the new ones that I fitted.

I went into detail with him about what I’ve done and made sure he understands that I’m not an idiot, and have asked him to give the car a diagnostic once-over with regard to what it’s failing on. If he can’t shed any further light, I’ll take it elsewhere. It’s frustrating as I just want my car back!!

Did you check the NSF piston for movement ?

I did, when cold it behaved exactly as it should-it may be the case that it’s misbehaving when warm of course.
