Went out 35 miles tonight. Got "ANTI-SKID TEMPORARILY OFF" again upon starting - it quickly went away and I didn't see "ANTI-SKID SERVICE REQUIRED" at all.
Plugged it into VIDA again when I got back, which confirmed the code wasn't seen during the operating cycle (I haven't cleared them out yet from the other day). Monitored the steering angle sensor readout again and today it seems to be working flawlessly, reporting the correct angle however I turn it. Car has been parked in the sun all day, and it was most of yesterday, and it's now completely dry outside. Obviously, I need to repeat this a few more times yet... it's meant to be hot and sunny all week though, it seems, so it will be interesting to see whether it comes up again. Maybe this is rain related after all. In which case... what could be getting wet and causing a brand new steering angle sensor to apparently report bad values? Could a leak onto the CEM cause that without any other electrical symptoms? Might be getting ahead of myself though; I'll be driving regularly this week I think so we'll see if hot weather is indeed a cure... then hopefully rain at the weekend and see if it comes back.

Still yet to find a resolution to my problems.
I seem to be back to seeing "ANTI-SKID TEMPORARILY OFF" then "ANTI-SKID SERVICE REQUIRED" every time I start (the latter remaining in the DIM messages then for the entire drive). It did seem to alleviate midweek last week amid the heatwave after several days of no rain... I went out on a day trip yesterday, in some extremely mixed weather - clear blue skies, then torrential rain, then repeat - and was getting both messages every time I started it. To my alarm, I also noticed the steering column seemed to be squeaking again when turning (as it was before I had the clockspring/SAS done), while leaving a car park after rain. I still think the weather is involved but I can't say so conclusively. I'm still getting BCM-0109 and SAS-000E, claiming an SAS internal fault, yet the SAS and clockspring are both new. Really not sure what to think at this point. Could ABS rings or sensors cause SAS-000E? A wet CEM? (There's no other known electrical problems though) Will phone the specialist that did the work soon before the warranty on it expires but still looking to collect ideas.

I think on 2005 models you need software calibration of a new SAS - not sure though.
I've not bothered to fix this on our 2005 model as it's not an MOT fail. How much did the new module cost - I think I was quoted £250 or so just for the part which also put me off. |

My clockspring was £290 to my Volvo specialist. I almost wish I'd left mine now as it doesn't affect the car at all although I did read some discussion about whether it could be a fail if the MOT tester noted a safety system was disabled. Anyway as I'm still having issues and I did pay to have it done, I've booked it in to go back again next week under warranty. What's still odd in my case is that it did work flawlessly for a week and then it rained. The rain may just be a coincidence but it seem to get better again the dry last week. Giving that it's throwing SAS-000E internal fault, I've observed it give ridiculous SAS angles, and the column squeak seems to be returning, garage (and I) suspect I may have been unlucky and got a defective/bad clockspring so are ordering another one in... Still that pesky possible rain connection though...we'll see what happens and I'll keep the thread updated! It's frustrating at this point though as it's the only thing wrong with the car now.

Get the garage to check your ABS sensors and reluctor rings too. And that the driveshaft bolts are nice and tight.

Steering Angle Sensor
Apologies for hijacking this thread but my XC70 has just had its steering rack replaced by my local garage and when I went to collect it this same message came up when I switched on.
What have they done to the SAS? Presumably it got damaged or disturbed when the column was disconnected? Fault codes BCM-109, BCM-0111, BCM-0115 as well as particular SAS ones. Thanks, Bill

Clock spring out of position.
Further to my previous post and maybe a suggestion for the OP :-
The SAS on my XC70 refused to be calibrated until the steering wheel, airbag etc. had all been removed and the clock spring carefully centred and re-assembled. It appears that the steering column may have been up to a complete turn out of position during the work to replace the rack. How the clock spring didn’t run out of travel and get wrecked at full-lock is a miracle... Very relieved to have got rid of the ‘Anti-skid service required’ message, finally. Bill

--- As for my car, I guess an opportunity to provide a little update but not much to say. I'm back to seeing "ANTI-SKID TEMPORARILY OFF" on every single start, followed by "ANTI-SKID SERVICE REQUIRED" about a quarter of the mile down the road. Same state as it was in before I had the clockspring/SAS done. I'm increasingly confident it's not really rain-related, although the weather is so unsettled I can't really say for sure. A few days dry, then a few days rain, then repeat... I need a week's dry weather to see if it goes away! Anyway, my little timeline now looks like this... - Day 0 - Clockspring/SAS done, all worked fine. - Day 7. Rained overnight. Got in the car and Anti-Skid messages returned. - Day 7 - 21 - Intermittent Anti-Skid messages. Not all the time. And now we're on day 28+ and we're back to every single start, it seems, without fail. So the situation would appear to have progressively worsened, but it all worked flawlessly for the first week. Given I've observed ridiculous readings in VIDA too, I do now suspect I got a bad part or I've got bad connections or something like that. I had the car booked in last week to have the clockspring replaced again under warranty on part; unfortunately, the garage is operating on a single staff member due to COVID and suchlike and so now they've got a backlog and had to cancel. Seeing as it all drives fine I'm not too bothered. Doesn't look like it's going in this week either and I won't be able to take it in next week, so this little saga's going to keep on going a while longer yet! I'll put a post in this thread once it's eventually all resolved. Just a shame really, it's no big issue day-to-day but it's now my only DIM message, we seem to be back to square one and it did have a load of money thrown at it.

An update at last and with luck it will be thread closed.
After three days of software downloads and pondering to no avail, the garage concluded the SAS must indeed have a genuine internal fault and ordered me another clockspring. New one in and now it's all working again, code-free! Of course, my first replacement also worked flawlessly for a week, but I hope this will be end of the matter for me. It would appear as though my initial speculation that this may have been weather-related was unfounded; the past weeks have been very dry and it's still been doing it on every drive. It worked fine for the first week, then became an intermittent fault, and was a persistent fault by the time it was taken back this week. They observed it throw SAS-000E without even moving the steering wheel, as have I, and confirmed the nonsense readings I'd been seeing. After fitting the second new clockspring, the codes have disappeared. The garage also noted that the SAS reading in VIDA seems to be updating more quickly and smoothly. Both clocksprings were new genuine parts; it would appear I was a victim of simple bad luck and got a dud one first time round. Let's hope this one holds up for longer than a week... if SAS-000E resurfaces again any time soon, then I guess it will be time to take a much closer look at wiring and electrical contacts and suchlike. But I hope it won't be necessary...
