I see your point when talking XC90 - it's a big ass, full-size SUV- so I'm with you there- I too see no point for a "sporty" version- even though there is a 400+hp version of it (not all SPA cars are diesels, you know..). But I thought we're taking general, all SPA cars - comparing trims..

I have an XC60 - it's a diesel alright, but bear in mind that XC60 with a D5 is a 7-second 0-100 car.. in my book that is sporty. Combine that with 20% stiffer springs, dual-chamber shocks- and paddle snifters start to make sense. As a matter of fact- I use them all the time- be it to simply hold a gear- or to upshift/downshift when needed.. Ofcourse, I love the styling too - matte silver trim as opposed to chrome bits on the Inscription, black grille as opposed to "waterfall", matte silver mirrors- and the interior- which I would not change nothing about- as I said- different folks- different strokes..

If you don't mind me asking- why going through trouble of ordering a Momentum and optioning it to Inscription level- if you can get an Inscription outright - and possibly even save a few $$?

Momentum over inscription - wife hated the leather dash and the chrome outside - too blingy, silver wheels. Was worried about leather longevity esp with kids (that was spot on).
Xc60 can do sporty esp with t5 with all the revs - straight line speed to me does not make sporty unless it’s brutal like electric - you can properly control cornering with rev modulation on t5 and diesel just has no rev range to do that - I really enjoyed driving it and the deafening silence around town. It’s a bit too cosy for my liking and I think it doesn’t look great from certain angles - xc90 looks awesome from pretty much all angles in the right colour trim combos. I had basic r design with metal mesh inserts and it felt cheap to me inside perhaps because I was missing all the xc90 options. I like interior in the pictures but not live. The boot sizes are just worlds apart and arches intrusions for the second row entry no good. Great to drive.
The only time I liked r design inserts was with carbon fibre but it still feels like it needs some contrast in that interior. I just think given the talent in the design team there they could come up with some good combos with some contrast for r design and also block people from ordering clashing ones.

OK, let's not turn this into hp vs. torque discussion..

Yeah, 60 and 90 are worlds apart.. different audience.. As a matter of fact in Sep last year I had my eye on an XC90 at first- test drove several cars - and that's when they got a first XC60 tester. Out of curiosity I asked for a drive- and I have made my decision 10 minutes later. Easier to maneuver around Paris, spacey cabin, decent trunk, great looks and the same amenities one gets in the 90. For me, XC90 really makes sense if one needs a 3rd row- which is not the case with us..

Cheers!

I've never met anyone including myself who "liked" the courtesy car they were given. I guess if they did, they would have bought the same model as courtesy car in the first place.

I have an S90 myself but I never understood why the motoring press call the S90 the flagship model as XC90 clearly costs significantly more. It is in a different category compared to the S90/V90 in my view.

So after 24 hours with the XC90...I really love the driving position, the power of the petrol T6 is very good. The average mpg climbed to 25 MPG, which wasn't too bad I thought but the tyre roar didn't fade away...

The XC90 is riding on 20" Continental ContiSportContact 5. The V90 on 18" Pirelli p-Zeros.

I decided to do a little experiment on the way to the dealer - I downloaded Decibel X, placed the phone in the centre console just below the 12V socket and drove normally, without the radio on, I recorded the sound level over the journey to the dealer approximately 55 minutes due to traffic. On collecting the V90 I placed the phone in the same position and began recording again for the drive home - just over 1 hour 10mins.

The results:

XC90 T6 R Design (Petrol): Average 84.7 Db, Max 99.5 Db
V90 D4 R Design (Diesel) : Average 82.3 Db, Max 95.9 Db

The app characterising the XC90 as a concern hall and the V90 as an automobile based upon those results. So based upon this small piece of data a Diesel V90 is quieter than a Petrol XC90 when compared in the same trim level (R Design trim), but with different wheels sizes and tyres.

For those interested the V90 has received the latest software update (MY19 - the technician said) - the only noticeable difference is the change in the symbols in the drivers display for the adaptive cruise and the size of the text and instructions in the centre of the display - it now shows more information.

I also had chance to view the new XC40 in the showroom - it looks fabulous. They are selling like hot cakes I was told, it is causing supply issues for certain trim/engine choices due to customer demand. Again the Chesterfield Stoneacre garage is worth a visit.

I forgot to say - the Latest software update now include full support for the iPhone X - so you can now read out text messages without asking siri for those of you who have one of those.

When it comes to materials, standard kit, and overall refinement- Momentum is just what it is- a base model.

Besides, you are missing the point of R - it is not about matching the curtains to the carpet- it is the only trim that caters to those looking for an overall sportier feel- paddle snifters, stiffer suspension, etc- but also styling elements.

Btw, what walnut inserts are you talking about on Momentum? I wasn't aware you can even add wood as an option on Momentum..
I have the wood inserts on my XC90 MY17 plus the blonde on Charcoal interior which to me looks a lot better than black interior. I prefer the tougher leather you get with the Momentum as has been said it wears very well and looks no different from new. I just give it a wipe over every so often.

Good point. Based on the forum feedback everyone is pleased with their SPA interiors black or light, wood or aluminium, but they tend to not quite get a different SPA platform interior and like coming back to the one they are used to and love.

I dont know how accurate your app is but 4 Db is about 30% ‘louder’ I wouldn’t have thought there would be more than 2dB in it.

My last car was an R Lux with the nappa style leather, all black.

I was a bit bored with the all black having had this style (ti/ AMG etc.) for 10 years, so went blonde, dont really like wood though so left the iron ore silver.

I went momentum pro specced up as I found the smooth leather to not wear as well, so preferred the rougher style in the momentum, wasn’t keen on the extra chrome on the doors of the inscription and again after 10 years of diamond cut wheel worries and sometimes expense, the 18’’ coated wheels of the Pro look fine.

If I could spec the inscription grille and the weave style interior trim in lieu of iron ore I would have considered that along with R shaped seats in blonde.

This is a V90, not an XC90.
