I should have said that the 'newer' is in comparison to my current 1997 850 CD TDI auto estate with over 200k on the clock.

That's what I figured. The E4s are from 05 onwards I think with a few exceptions popping up every so often.
I have seen more than a few V70 owners here wishing they hadn't got rid of the loyal 850.

There are other 850s in the family, including an AWD machine.

Manual D5 183bhp was averaging about 50mpg on mainly motorway use, has recently dropped to 46 / 47 for similar use, possibly colder weather, possibly winter diesel.

A miser-mobile on similar duties could average 70mpg, dropping to 65mpg in winter.

My trusty Range Rover has averaged about 20mpg for similar use.

On a steady long run up & down the A1M about 50mpg at a steady 70mph
Always seems to be 35-38 min when driving mainly about town.

S60 D5 163 Geartronic 151k

Pretty pleased with what it gives after running a c70 & an Impreza

No the car doesn't get driven everywhere with Miss Daisy in the back, Since the Trans fluid change & reset of the adaptations getting the revs up into the last 1/4 of the range before shifting is a fairly frequent occurrence.

Ballpark work out on last long run from an almost full tank

240 Miles on A1M followed by 85 Miles Urban so 325 Miles total.

We'll call the tank Full for arguements sake so say I started with a full 70l so 15.7 Galls of Derv

Fuel gauge still over half but lets make it ½ to keep it simple

So I used 7.85 Gallons to cover 325miles giving me 41.4mpg on that mix so not bad at all.

The 240Miles took me 3Hrs 40mins to cover so ave speed wasn't too shabby at around 64 for the distance.

All a bit of a beermat numbers but gives you an idea

Thanks, folks, for taking the time to give me those figures for ammunition in the search for a replacement.

This could be a good route to follow.

didn't run the maths on my mega trip with special attention, mainly because it included a 2500 metre climb and then a descent a few days later, which distorts the figures something rotten!

but in 2000 miles or so I only filled up 4 times and not a complete tank each time. Last fill was in Luxembourg at 70p a litre; I stll have just over half that tank left after doing 330 miles back, with all the stooging about idling and queueing that a cross-channel ferry trip implies.

My previous S60 was one of the last E3 163PS cars with a manual gearbox. I had it remapped to 200-ish PS, it would give me 43/45 kicking around the doors, 53mpg at 70mph. You really have to cane it to get below 40mpg.

I then put a city filter DPF downpipe on it to get a green sticker for city driving in Germany, the consumption dropped to 40/41. My current S60 D3 E5 which is tuned similarly gives me 37/38 around the doors. The best I have ever had out of it on an overnight run at 70mph from Germany to Scotland is 47mpg.

If you want a reliable, strong diesel go for the E3 and if you find it lacking get it remapped. It will not harm the fuel consumption.

Remapped where, out of interest?

Dave Pengelly in Nottingham.
If you look on the landing page of his website that's my S60 (red) in the background on the MOT tile.
