Thanks KBB ,very informative .
Agree entirely over the nature of the fault .
The fuel trim being out of range high and low is, I believe, a classic sign of a fault with the maf .Cleaning will not correct if it genuinely faulty .Also have a look for bad /loose connections as a varying resistance could be causing problems ,but my money would be on the maf .

Thanks for the feedback guys. Could I ask Chris if the very informative DTC code info he provided pointers for is Volvo specific or is it generic - I'm just curious. It's great information and I would really like to know its pedigree for future reference. I've never seen anything like this before.

KBB provided some great analysis and diagnostic info in my other post and I'm going to follow this up asap - may take a few days due to weather and holidays but I will follow up and post the results as soon as I have something to report.

The DTC info is generic.

I thought that was probably the case, but it is good to know for certain. It's very useful information - many thanks for pointing it out.

I'm very dubious about these - I see so many tales of people having problems trying to get them to work. Have you actually been able to use one successfully? and if so would you recommend any particular vendor?

I bought mine second hand off a forum member so I had some confidence that it has been used sucessfully. I've since used it on a number of cars (mine and other owners) and it really is the only bit of kit that will communicate to all the onboard systems

OK thanks, I'd like to hear from anyone who has successfully bought one from the web and not had a shed load of problems getting it to work, and/or had to pay a fortune in customs duties because it came from China/Hongkong.

A little snippet on how DTC are generated and stored.
Counters can be particularly useful.

Thanks, Interesting - looks like useful information on just how prevalent a problem is, but I'll need to get my head down and work through it slowly to make sure I understand it all.

What tool would one need to see the Status Identifier and Counter values - my Creader vi does not seem to do this - would only VIDA/DICE do it?
