This is the spec of the STP oil additive, doesn't seem to be any plastic in there.
Viscosity at 40°C: 5200-6340 cSt Viscosity at 100°C: 250 cSt Zinc compounds: 10% Petroleum distillates: 30% Mineral Oil: 60% STP when it was in the can, a thick and sticky golden liquid like syrup, was recommended as a cam lube for newly built engines because a lot of it would stay on the surface. I used to have some 50:50 with engine oil in a pressure oil can for general small oiling jobs as it helped the oil stay where it was needed. Haven't seen these cans around for a while but as "The Racer's Edge" and it's use in Indy cars etc it appeared to be good stuff. STP = Scientifically Treated Petroleum. I agree that Teflon based stuff like Slick 50 got rather a bad name for ending up as a soggy ball in your sump and that might be considered a "plastic" additive. Chris, I need bums on seats for Christmas dinner at The Moat on Dec 11. Let me know if you are not singing and can come along? |
