Think I have found the cause of the smell - the oil level was at barely minimum!

Am now worried that the engine may have been damaged beyond repairs!!

If this is the case, would you recommend rebuild this engine, or buy another rebuild? It's done 160k miles, but started to use a bit of oil over the past year.

The engine might survive. Why not drain out the existing oil, flush the engine to remove any metallic particles and refill with oil and see how it behaves.

After the garage changed the engine oil, my son in Canada had the sump plug drop out of his V6 Mitsubishi and it immediately lost all its oil. I assumed the engine was a write off and told him to claim against the garage for negligence but he had it towed and flushed and refilled with oil and the lump seems to have survived the incident! You only had low oil, he had no oil!

Thanks for the suggestion, think I will do that - but with it being Xmas holiday now, it'll be in the New Year before my local garage will re-open.

Merry Xmas.

Which engine do you have, if it’s the later 2.0 D with the 8 speed auto, there were problems with burning oil, the oil control rings I believe.
