The 165 would have to be custom built. I have considered it and there are a couple of ways of doing as to where you graft what to what.
I would probably opt for a fairly rotten 164 base car and just you the bulkhead forward from the 164. Rear end I would go for a late model 240 as they tend to have the least corrosion issues. I might considered changing the rear lights to the 145 style ones but that is just down what the builder prefers to use. I would stick with a B30 and probably the E engine for power with either a manual box of find a 4 speed autobox to use. Again like you it would be LPG powered. If you are happy to go with a 145 there is a very nice one for sale here http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=192931 It is manual but converting to auto is easy enough. I have a spare gearbox available and the other bits needed to convert if you were going that way. |

You missed out on this one
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=194582 and there was also this one but a late model 74 http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=189226 keep an eye on ebay they do come up but expect to be doing some welding. The common rot spots are, wheel well, wheel arches, sills (mainly the end by the wheel arch), the panel that the bonnet hinges are fixed to, front edge of inner wings and the front wings do also tend to rot out. The worst spot for repair is around the front windscreen |

I have to admit that my love of estates comes purely from a longstanding practical requirement for load carrying and towing. Some versions IMO look better than the saloon versions [ CX Citroen for example ]. I suppose in reality my days of whizzing accross Europe with a trailer and show car are long gone - maybe a saloon + a builders trailer maight do the trick these days ! It's the front sheetmetalwork / grill that really appeals with the 164 / 5 - has that Olde Worlde [ ie Classic ] look. A 165 certainly seems a distant dream now with the info I've recieved here - and I'd have to find a 145 for a darned sight less than £3.5K !!! Ironically I had a 1971 145 about 15 years ago - paid £350 for it ! |

Volvo made them
I understood that the 'original 165s were factory produced using a 164 front end and a 240 rear end. The latter rear suspension is far superior anyway.

It seems that my thoughts that an old 145 could be bought for £500 - £700 may be wildly optimistic. Seems they have gone through the "old banger" phase to "Collectible" since I last bought one ! The 164/5 front end is somewhat "Italianesque" - certainly a very pleasing shape. Reminiscent of the larger Farina BMC range - although much better of course. I seem to recall a large 60's Fiat saloon had a similar front end treatment. I may have to realign my thoughts to an inexpensive 164 [ is there such a thing ? ] together with a tow bar and trailer - or an equally inexpensive 145. A carburetted 164 [ auto ] would fit the bill. Thanx for everyone's positive feedback. |

There was a cheap early 245 on eBay until a few days ago, which could have front panels from a 164 grafted on. Converting a saloon to an estate sounds like an awful lot of work, plus untold hassle from dvla...
The amount of work you're talking about is several thousand pounds worth, is the road tax that bad?? How many years would you need of tax free to recoup the premium of a pre 74 car? |
