And the dealer informs me he has now accepted an offer on the car! Bizarre, bought for £11,800 plus commision, sold to someone for north of £17k on a 3 day turnaround!

Thoughts on the sale
Is the moral of the story that you would probably get a better deal buying privately than through a dealer. Why would someone put such a good looking car through an auction rather than trying to retail it?The purchaser will obviously now be covered under the sale of goods act.Buying a car at an auction like this one means you have little chance of hearing the engine run,and only a limited amount of poking around underneath the car that you can do.
It was an interesting auction to attend, with a few cars getting good strong bidding and a few getting very little interest. There was an isetta bubble car, that had obviously had a very high standard restoration, looking lovely in lilac and white. It was bid to £15,800.but that didn't buy the car! |

I agree with you. The auction is always a gamble for the vendor and purchaser. Interestingly I think the ES was advertised privately on carandclassic.co.uk a few weeks before the auction at circa £17k but, presumably, didn't sell! |

I know we would all like a bargain, but I might add that even at £17k I would see this particular ES as good value and the nature of trading as we all know is that some you win and some you don't. I expected the dealer to put it up at one of two prices £18k or stuck his neck out at £24k. The lower resale offered a quick return, good business.
I went to H&H yesterday where another ES was offered, had it have been anything like Saturday's I'd have happily bought it at £11/12k. That said (and I hope no-one on here owns it) it was awful in comparison, no seam lines, overspray and musty interior, the list goes on. The vendors description told a completely different story to physically viewing the car.....it sold for £11k plus a high premium. I was not the highest bidder as I saw the car at around £6k tops. I hope the new owner doesn't suffer buyers remorse! |

I see that two other cars from the classic car auctions sale have found their way onto ebay, neither have ,as yet, reached the price paid at the auction.

Hi All.
Just found this thread and joined the forum. I bought the P1800s 999KX at the auction. Our plan is to restore and preserve the car with the intention as using it as a showroom display and for events and shows in the year. Since buying it, its sat in the workshop awaiting an evaluation but we started this week and overhauled the carbs and fuel pump to see how she will run. As a Volvo franchise main dealer with a body shop were not short of helping hands but lots of other cars to service & repair too so we'll be working on the P1800 whenever we're quiet and have time. Ill keep a log and photos and share when I can. On first inspection she seems to be solid enough underneath but has had a full respray before and the paint has reacted. so we will strip to metal and start again. Craig |
