Hello Alex, that is the same first fix I had applied in 2010, it was changed it to the clamp/fix in Just Drives picture in 2011 while in for a service.

Im predicting the dealer response will be something along the lines of ??? followed by F.O.! Is there a recall number for the modified bracket...? I would think thats my only hope.

I certainly would agree Dewson03.
I'm amazed that a cable tie was even suggested as a solution to this problem when it was first brought to their attention given Volvo's reputation for safety. Hope you get yours back soon with lots of apologies and freebies! |

I don't think so Alex, but it may be the same as the 2007/8 recall fix. My only notification was a letter in late 2009 from Volvo asking that my car go to a dealer for a "safety check" that resulted in the Ty-Wrap fix. The only reason I knew about the later more permanent fix was because the service dept told me it had been done during the annual service in 2011, probably only mentioned as I always insist on a copy of the workshop job card with my invoice.

I knew I was right! Christ how dare Volvo do that to somebody else.
Please please report this through the VSB if you are based in UK or your appropriate vehicle safety authority You will be bull****ted by your main dealer or Volvo UK or Volvo in your country. Do not take any crap from anybody your safety is worth more than that. I have had to deal with crap from Volvo UK do not take it! My car main dealer 3 weeks NO FIX authorised as of this afternoon. NO PARTS NO point in asking for part number as clamp dependant on throttle body type. I am really really angry What happens if this cable tie fails at 80 mph???? Thank you for taking an interest! Will be very interested to see how things go for you. I am convinced without the VSB Volvo would have absolutely ignored the problem and any thoughts about your safety. |

I know this is likely to be unpopular but I think you need to take a chill pill and see things in context. Yes, it is a design flaw and yes the first cable tie fix wasn't great - but your hose wasn't "destroyed" and it's unlikely that your family would have been "at risk" from the fault. The hose would not impact the rad fan at 80 mph as the rad fan would not be running - it's on a thermo switch and generally only comes on in traffic. The very worst that could have happened - if you had ignored the grating noise for a long time - is a loss of power assistance to the steering. If this happened at 80 mph - you wouldn't have noticed.
It seems clear that it has been noticed before as Volvo tie-wrapped it and then clamped it but clearly they decided that it wasn't serious enough for a recall. And as for doing the repairs without your authority - would you not expect the dealer to apply all technical bulletins and mods at a paid service? To question Volvo's parentage over it is unnecessary.

The engineer at VSB is not sharing your opinion.
Any weakness in any high pressure hose can cause sudden uncontrolled ruptures 2 problems - vaporisation of hydraulic fluid results in fire risk over hot engine - loss of steering assistance The VSB explained to me that the issue is not loss of your ability to steer the car but the behaviour of the car undergoing sudden loss of power assistance with consideration to other road users that is the major safety concern. I am a surgeon and I have designed surgical medial equipment I know a lot about manufacturing process engineering and high pressure hoses My clinical technician lost power assistance in his merc on the m25 he races cars he stil maintains it was one of the scariest experiences of his life You still think I need a chill pill? |

Please do not question the risks involved regarding personal injury
The fact that VSB have processed my concerns as far as they have indicates there is a real risk of personal injury I find your post really condescending and unhelpful but you already admit to that so please don't spoil an otherwise sensible post |
