To be honest loads of things happen that until you have an accident you are unaware of such as trailer weights, with my v50 the max tow weight is 1500kg which means i cant tow any trailer that is capable of carrying more than 1500kg regardless of how much weight im actually towing at the time. Im only 20 and passed my test 3 years ago so i dont get any grandfather rights but i know i can tow anything that my car can (legally) on my license including my 1275kg caravan.

That is a heavy old trailer - I have the same - but mine weighs 600kg and will take a load of 2400kg.

It is a 3.5 ton gross trailer with storage lockers.

I think you might have to replate the trailer unless your pulling with a big vehicle.

the trailer was ordered new at a lower plated weight, but they supplied the original plate for me so as not to affect its resale value.

If you are stopped the police will compare the plated limits of the trailer to the limits of the tow vehicle.

They will then make a judgement call on whether they believe the weight of the trailer and load exceeds the limit of the car.

If they believe it does they will direct you to a weighbridge.

HOWEVER - if you are towing something clearly below the trailer weight they are unlikely to do so EG XC90 limit - 2250KG, trailer limit 3000kg - load = Caterham.

I follow the logic that by towing 1800KG trailer (600kg trailer, 1200kg load) with a trailer with a limit of 3000kg and a car limit of 2000kg - I am inside the engineering envelope.

Mind you, when was the last time you were actually stopped by a police officer? When towing?

.
The police /traffic commissioners do roadside checks ,they will even check you if you are not moving ie;stopped.
The reason contractors are using smaller trailer is because you can not overload it weight wise.
I have been stopped but never been overloaded but i know of people being overweight by having extra passengers.

volvo 2.0 D year 2005
kerb side weight 1390kg
85% kerb side weight 1185kg
max towing weight 1500kg
volvo 2.0d year 2007
kerb side weight 1461kg
85% kerb side weight 1242kg
max towing weight 1500kg
look at the chassis plate of your car (looking for max gross weight), the car and the trailer should not be over the maxium gross weight of your vehicle
