I wouldn't say that WD-40 is a good lubricant for anything.
It has an effect whilst still wet/liquid, but once it dries it will have almost no lubricating properties. It's good for cleaning things though. Best use something else after WD-40 for long term lubrication. I've used ACF-50, but there are other lubricants that will work. I'm hoping it has solved my issue, time will tell. |

The WD-40 variant I used because it was on the shelf was the one with added silicone in it. While silicone is very bad for electronic systems, the switch is a simple microswitch and the problem was corrosion or contamination of the mechanical operating lever so the penetrating properties of the WD-40 worked the fluid into the mechanism and the silicone stayed there after the hydrocarbons evaporated and left a little lubrication to allow the operating lever to move. That was two years ago and I haven't had any trouble with it since.

I had the same problem and a squirt or two of contact cleaner sorted it out for over a year. however the problem has resurfaced and has failed to respond to further treatment.
Changing the switch appears to be a pig of a job unless you're a left handed gynaecologist with X-ray vision, so I too have bypassed the switch. in over 40 years of driving I have never had a bonnet come open when it shouldn't have done and on all modern cars opening the bonnet is a two stage affair so the risk is minimal. However I understand that this microswitch also tells the alarm system the bonnet is closed so if it's been bypassed it can no longer trigger the alarm if the bonnet is prised open. Personally, this is fairly well down my list of things to worry about. Martin 2008 V70 2.4D Auto 117,000 miles |
