D5's will log cam sensor faults with prolonged cranking of engine without starting even if it isn't that at fault,
If timings ok and fuel rail pressures ok i would just make sure egr valve isn't stuck open, Easy to check just remove elbow pipe to manifold and crank engine, Might also be worth checking coolant temp sensor readings with a warm engine

That's worth knowing, on the timing is it important to pin/lock the cam then work from there, I'm pretty sure it was set from the crank end.
We think it all started with it trying to regen the dpf, it's had a couple of sensors then swapped engines because of the oil useage and large amounts of smoke out of the back |

I don't use (or even own) locking tools.
Once the cam pulley mark is aligned, the mark on the crank pulley should be in line with the blip on the oil pump. What is the current precise cranking fuel pressure in psi/bar/whatever? "pressure is good I believe" is a bit vague.

So today we set the new engine up by its timing marks and the old engine up by its timing marks and removed the cam sensor to reveal the lobes for the pick up are in completely different places. The new used engine appears to have a thread on the cam where as the old cam looks like its cast in one piece. So it looks like the cams will need swapping

Did you cure the problem?
It seems the 200hp cam has a different pattern on the cam sensor wheel than the 185 has. The 163 also seem to have the sensor wheel in a different place on the cam. |

Hi so is the engine swap a different engine type ?
Do you have to recode the ECU for the different injectors on that engine? Dave |

Hi There,
I've seen the last post here asking if the issue was ever resolved. I have done exactly the same, and had to replace the engine in my 2009 R-Design. It now does exactly the same, wont start without easy start, and once warm, takes a few seconds to start, then runs flawlessly. Did anyone ever get to the bottom of it please ? Mick |
