Reversing camera on XC60
I don't have a sat-nav unit on my XC60 and so the OEM reversing camera is not useful to me.
It seems that the ordinary monitor (i.e. no sat-nav) is not a TV style screen that could accept a video signal from an aftermarket reversing camera. Has anyone found a way to use it with a reversing camera? http://users.tpg.com.au/mpaine/driveways.html (started in 2002) |

Reversing camera on XC60
I have found a wireless reversing camera system that looks promising.
I also found a useless wiring diagram for the XC60: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/dow...ng_diagram.pdf (thanks Matthew) |

What is scary is seeing; a) how much wiring is in the car (150 pages to show the wiring in one car!!! - a fully computerised Main Battle Tank is not a lot larger b) just how computerised the car is - I haven't counted the number of sensors, it is certainly an awful, awful lot! Link marked for the future

Installation of a Gater wireless reversing camera
Installation instructions - XC60 reversing camera
Michael Paine After considering several options, I decided to install a Gater wireless reversing camera since it avoids the need to run wires from the back to the front of the car. The monitor is built into a clip-on rear view mirror (see last photo) Gater model ARV 43M (AU$170) The camera is attached to a bracket that sits neatly behind the number plate. Camera bracket clips behind number plate To feed the wires inside the tailgate I decided to drill a hole in the plastic plate that holds the number plate lights (I still need to seal up the hole in the photo). To avoid this you can buy a camera that replaces a number plate light but I don't know if it is compatible with the wireless system. Hole through plastic plate Next feed a two-core power cable around the tailgate trim and through the rubber connector at the top of the tailgate. Rubber connect for wiring Feed the cable back down to the right hand rear lamp unit. You need to locate the cable for the reversing light. This is a grey/violet cable. I found that this did not supply enough voltage to the reversing camera unit and so I have to fit a 12V relay (Jaycar: LKK M4-012-1Z2G, Mini M4 Relay/Universal Automotive Relay) I took power from the power socket in the boot (white/red wire), connected this to the relay input and connected the camera power cable to the normally open terminal on the relay. Now connect the reversing light wire and an earth wire to the relay solenoid terminals. The camera cable also needs an earth (black/green wire at power socket or black/blue rear light assembly). Note that the power socket in the boot is always live so it is a good idea to take out its fuse (number 7 in box A under the glove box) when making the connections. Connection to reversing light cable, 12V relay and power socket Close up of rear light assembly Connect the relay input to the white/red cable at the back of the power socket (undo the screw ring at the back of the socket to gain access). Connect the clip-on mirror to a power source such as a power socket. Run the cable up the a-pillar trim (being careful not to affect the side curtain) and along the headlining. Clip the mirror over the existing mirror. When star the engine and engage reverse the monitor should activate. Mirror with activated monitor. (hopefully those image links work!) |
