Gone from XC90 to Jag Sportbrake in May this year.....

I've been with Churchill for a few years now and they've been very competitive every year so me and the missus have stayed with them but 1st insurance offered for my Jag this year was £430 up from £320 last year on the XC90....still beat comparison sites for fully comp and extras so took the deal.

I'm 67 so no chaps. I don't think it's age related it's just hit right across the board.

However news on the grapevine from the guy I spoke to at Churchill is that they expect a drop in prices next year which remains to be seenbut he was unable to tell me why all premiums went up this year.

We shall see won't we?

My 2021 insurance for the XC60 was £292, that increased to £491 this time last year with Volvo Insurance for the XC40 Recharge EV.

Just had the renewal through and the admin for Volvo Insurance has changed earlier in the year and is now charged monthly, no option to pay annually, and the premium has reduced by £52 based on the monthly premiums.

That includes legal cover which last year’s premium didn’t.

I was expecting a fairly hefty increase based on other Forum members comments, so was pleasantly surprised.

There is no rhyme or reason to insurance renewal quotes.

All you can do is phone or browse around.

The only thing different is that I turned 76 Last march. When I got my renewal notice I went online convinced I could get it cheaper...NOT a CHANCE!!! it wasn't unusual to see quotes of £800 and on a few quotes in excess of £1100 !!! The point of this post is to ask has anyone my age noticed a big increase in their premiums on renewal.

I appreciate costs of labour and parts has increased significantly over the last few years but is it my age thats the main reason for the increase in premiums, would appreciate other peoples experiences. Cheers Roy

Hi, I'm 73 and my MY2023 V60 PHEV insurance this year is now £867 up from £512. I'm with Direct Line, which insurance company are you with? I tried the comparison sites and there were no better quotes, some even more expensive.

My renewal for v90 D4 this year is £714 up from £437.
Are they able to charge us as much as they like to??
I don't find any sense in this!

That's the way it works, sellers try to get as much as they can and buyers try to pay as little as they can.

I can confirm that the increases are across the board and not an age related thing. I'm 43, over 15 years no claims, no endorsements (well, not been caught at least) and my insurance increased from £343 last year to £551 this year on my MY 22.5 XC60 Recharge Polestar Engineered on a like for like policy with LV.
I tried shopping about but the vast majority of other 5* providers were quoting over £900 with much larger excesses (a few were quoting nearly £1,200 with a £1k excess!!).

I think it comes down to the quite large repair costs on the modern SPA Volvos where a single headlight unit alone costs £1,200 and to simply align the cameras and radars for all the modern driver assist systems is around £1,000.
Consider a simple front end smash, both headlights, new radar unit (located behind the Volvo badge), maybe a bumper, respray, possible radiator (one of maybe 3 or 4 behind the grill these days), an airbag or two and all the computer resets and coding to get it all working together again and its £6-8K bill already without labour and a replacement car cost. Factor in labour rates and the insurance company is forking out over £10K for a 'Simple' front end smash which would in the olden days been £1-2k all in.

At this rate, I will be ditching anything modern and going back to old school cars if the insurance costs keep heading up like they are not on modern stuff.

I have declined my renewal, and they ask me what quote I got from another company and finally I have insurance for 500 quit.

It is still higher than last year but acceptable and over £200 in pocket.

Unbelievable behavior from insurance providers!!!

But you aren't allowing for the fact that the very things that mean expensive repairs also help prevent a lot of accidents in the first place.
The LED headlights give much better night visibility and make the car easier to see, radar unit allows adaptive cruise control, lowering the risk of accidents and also gives auto emergency braking to massively reduce numbers of accidents…..so its not quite as cut and dried as you suggest….
