If you get a key cloned (so that key 2 and key 3 are clones of key 1), then as I understand it, if you immediately use key 2 it will initially work but the rolling code will then change, so key 1 and key 3 will no longer work because they will each still have an identical keyid but not know about the new code.

Key 2 will continue to work, and the code continues to "roll". I don't know if the code rolls on each use.

I believe a completely new key first needs to be programmed to the car, and then will get a keyid and rolling code of its own.

FYI Does anyone know if one can tell when each key was last used? Not sure if you can see this in Vida DICE

I think a maximum of 5 keys can be active at any one time.

If you lose a key, Volvo can deactivate it (on the car), so it will no longer work (eg if someone else finds it).

Please tell me if I wrong about any of this.

It is the key fob that makes use of rolling codes NOT the chip in the key.

The key code ID does not change ie a cloned copy of key 1 is identical to the original and will always be identified as key1. "n" number of cloned copies of the original key1 will always be seen as key 1 by the system and operate the ignition, similarly cloned copies of key2 and key3 will always operate the igniton lock. Any "dead" ie cut copies of keys without a chip will operate the door and boot locks where fitted as they are not "chip guarded". There is no need to delete any of them from the system.

However, if a new lock barrel is fitted, all previous keys must be deleted and the new key codes added as a system/software update. Once they are logged to the sysytem any cloned copies of any of the new keys will be identified a true and will operate the ignitiion lock.

Well a good end result. The replacement module arrived, part number as per my original post, with 2 fobs (1 original Volvo, 1 replacement). With battery -ve disconnected I swapped the modules, reconnected and tested. Both remotes work fine, and as @ASt85 mentioned, the tailgate requires 2 clicks and doesn't unlock with the 4 doors.
Happy bunny, just a spare key to deal with now.
