you can get it wrong just as easily with an angle gauge, espcially if you dont use it correctly. Im still not convinced that the torque on the CV nut has any effect on the bearing life as its not creating any pre load on the bearing itself

For what it's worth I've had good luck just replacing the entire front spindle with bearing included with one from the wreck yard. It makes the job a ton easier and since bearings are supposed to last the lifetime of the car getting used ones isn't really a big deal.

I do have a spare wreck in my shed which I would use for the parts if it is indeed the bearing gone - but generally speaking the older S/V40's are not all that common over here so getting hold of second hand spares isnt so easy
