I do understand the reasons for why manufacturers do these things, but that was not the purposes of my posting. I am asking if a full size spare wheel will fit into the wheel well of a '12 XC70 should I buy one. I am hoping someone will have had personal exp[experience of fitting a full size wheel into the wheel well to save me from having to jack up the car, put on the skinny and try putting the removed wheel into the wheel well to prove the point to the dealer should I decide to buy a full size spare.

Would it not be possible to measure the depth[if it's and under floor fitting]and if necessary the diameter of the wheel well and compare it to same measurements taken from one of the wheels. The XJ 6 I had came with a space saver which give a slight "dip" to the boot floor, but a full size wheel could be installed, but you lost the "dip" and thus a small amount of boot depth.

Of course you are right about me putting in the work but I'd hoped someone would save me the trouble. My bad! Especially since if the full size wheel is too deep, it will stop the very comprehensive fitted boot floor from seating correctly.

When I baught my MY10 XC70 I was told by the dealer a full sized wheel and tyre would NOT fit the well and it would have to be a space saver.

Of course anything can be made to fit anywhere, you could cut the wheel well out of the boot and weld a band into it to deepen it, but do you want to go to that expence, and the possible minefield of such a modification.
The police XC70s around me carry the full sized spare vertically in the boot area and as it's a spec should be available through dealers, you will however loose a lump of bootspace and I think the ability to lift the well cover.

Hello

Spacesaver here, and so far only used once, to drive a mile and a half to the tire fitters for a puncture repair. Terrifying, as it felt like the car was going to fall over in the corners. It was the NSF...

I have to say, being a coward, it'll be the AA for me if I ever have to change a wheel on the open road.
