OK, so............
1) I don't use s/s all the time, and switch on when I think I'm going to be a while, s/s in slow moving traffic is a pain, but put in neutral at stop, and it goes from .2 gph to .1 gph, a saving. 2) I coast a lot, on undulating B roads I keep in manual mode, let the engine 'work' up the hill, then coast down the other side at 99 mpg. (still at 50-60 mph), Also on slip roads where you come off to a roundabout, try to coast up to a stop, or prefereably not stop at all, but anticipate. 3) On Undulating B roads (and smaller A roads), I put in manual and leave in 5th), allows you to press the throttle and work the engine more without it changing down. 4) on M/way I alternate between cruise and not. If its flat, then cruise, if hilly, then not, as a down ward hill with an approaching uphill, set the gas at about 60mph, and don't move foot and as you go down the speed will pick up, then gently easy off with your big toe, as you reach the bottom of the dip, at say 75mph, slight pressure with big toe,and you can cruise up a lot further. It just SO very easy to enjoy these cars, but its a bit like having a thoroughbred race horse, and teaching it dressage. Except the power will always be there, but try not to use it. Still fun tho. Folks say'' smiles per mile is what its all about'' well, getting 52mpg out of an XC70 gives me smiles as well. It's the local short trips that kill the MPG, if you have a second car, a small second car, use this for shop runs. Interstingly i'm off to S.France a a couple of weeks, and I wonder what 10 hours at m/way speeds with bring.(although split into 2 days.) Regarding best speed, its a balance between the best power range of the engine, and the wind speed resistance. I think 1800 rpm is considered a good area to be in, that would be about 68mph? but at the disadvantage of increased wind resistance, constant weaving in and out overtaking, (unless you can filter and overtake without actually accelerating). So I stay around the 60 mph,I'm never in a rush, normally always early, and relax. Last edited by yostumpy; May 30th, 2022 at 18:37. |

Yeah - I think I need to get a bit more creative with my right and left foot action yostumpy! Enjoy your S France hols also! I tend to cruise at 70..which according to my GPS embedded in my dashcam is 68mph. I like the quietness of 60mph though.
Trouble is- I've got a family saying "are we there yet?" and "I need a wee" every flipping five minutes - so I'll have to experiment. At night! On me own! Lol!
