Fair play for all that driving! Would you have wanted an oil cooler for a heavier trailer?

Default Towing

I have used my 164 to tow an 18ft Sprite Major from Cornwall [ Newquay ]
to Scotland [ Moffat ] and back, Borg Warner 35 3 speed box no extra oil cooler [ one in rad and that's 1971].no problems just eased off the lead foot when temp started to rise. over run braking was fine . i`ve been towing with auto`s and manuals for over forty five years , the first was with a 1951 Austin Devon [ which I ran for 30 years cost me £10 I was robbed] and a 1955 Barkley Argosy then a Manuel 81/245 now an auto 1989 740, with a ZF box don't believe all the horror stories about them most are caused by revving in park , this should never be done you kill the box as the oil is not allowed to circulate.always use handbrake and rev in neutral. Just a tip from one that serviced and repaired these boxes for a lot of years in fork, yes fork trucks . you don't use poor boxes in them .so auto`s are OK if used properly .
Regards

My '96 945 2.3 LPT did 19.7 mpg towing this Scout boat trailer. It was a bit slow up some steep hills and it is interesting to reverse through gates with it.

Towed with a Granada auto with extra oil cooler forget it emptied 15 pints auto oil over caravan.
Then changed to Vauxhall senator 3Ltr 24 valve best tow car ever but very thirsty.
Also have towed in the past with a 940 Diesel auto and found it great it had an extra oil cooler fitted much easier than manual.
At present am lucky enough to tow with a XC90 Diesel (165) and find it great would not go back to manual at any price, about 24 to the gallon on a long trip.

[QUOTE=vanbeck1;263942]The newer auto boxes, ie after 2000 have a cooler fitted as standard and no further additons are normally required, unless you plan on towing horseboxes etc. Some of the auto boxes also change down themselves going down hills and engine braking is supplied as one normally gets with a manual.

I have just bought a 2003 D5 SE Auto + Geartronic and am planning a cravan tour around Scotland. Can anybody confirm for me if indeed my car has a cooler fitted as standard ?

Cheers

All volvo autos since the 70's have had auto gearbox coolers built into the radiator including yours :-)

It should do as this feature was introduced on teh AW gearbox when the 960 came out .. Hard to test it unless you are towing though .
