you can do it yourself once you have figured out the push button sequence on the diagnostic socket/plug .

It is on the left suspension tower , it has a plug which parks in a hole after you take the cover off ., you pull this out and plug it into the cars system number socket you want to work with , and there is a push button and red LED to read off codes and inputs .

Yes there are numbered sockets under the cap you need to plug the free plug into socket 1 for the keyless entry . then you need mode 4 for programming , but information on post 1995 440s is very sketchy on the method . i will see what i can find out .

ah ok. i'll take a look when i can. weather was horrible today and despite the car being in a small garage i didnt want to do any more than change the battery and see if it started
Cheers Clan appreciate your advice and effort I did find the below in another thread when i searched. -------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Fault codes retrieval • Open the diagnostic system's box cover and place the test cable mounted on the side of the box into an appropriate socket. • Turn the ignition ON to key position II without starting the engine. Wait about ten seconds. • Press the button once and hold it for more than one but less than three seconds. • The LED lamp will flash in successive series of three digits followed by a three-second pause. If there are no fault codes stored, it will flash 1-1-1 indicating the system being tested is operating correctly. • Count the successive flashes and record the fault code. • Press the button again, as described above. • Record the fault code. If it is the same as the previous one, then no additional codes are stored. Repeat until all the codes stored are retrieved (often a maximum of three). • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the test cable from a socket. 2. Erasing fault codes • Repeat step 1 and read all the fault codes again. Do not turn the ignition OFF after read-out. • Press and hold the button for more than five seconds, then release it. • When the LED lights, press the button again for more than five seconds and release it. When the LED goes off, the memory is cleared. • Test that memory is cleared by performing step 1. Code 1-1-1 should be returned. Note: erasing fault codes on the ABS socket will cause the ABS control to be lit. It will turn off after a test-drive with speed of more than 40 km/h. Sockets description 1 – alarm and remote locking system, 2 – fuel system, 3 – ABS, 5 – (investigating), 6 – cruise control, 7 – SRS (airbag). |

infact, this -
1. In the under bonnet diagnostic socket, connect fly lead to terminal 1 lock and unlock the vehicle using existing remote 2. Switch ignition on 3. Press test button on the diagnostic socket 4 times, LED illuminates 4. Press button 3 times, then 4 times and then 4 times again 5. Press the unlock button on the first remote 6. Repeat the programming procedure for additional remotes. 4 remotes maximum |

for the next remote make the last number 5 times in step 4 . and if another remote make it 6 etc , there are 4 available slots in memory . Anyway this method only worls up to 1995 models , There is another proceedure for these not quite so straightforward . Regarding the remotes , before doing anything more , take batteries out , press unlock and lock , insert batteries and try them again , very often this will get them working again ..

ah ok. well i gave the above procedure a go, but it didnt work. Even when trying your edited version about waiting between each press and wait for a flash from the LED between presses.
I ordered some new batteries last night, so will try the remote again when they get delivered - the remote doesnt even work the door locks, so this surely could be part or all of the problem. Appreciate your responses clan. I'll have a look for that other procedure. though you confused me about the press 5 times part. Ive only got one remote. Do i press the button on the box 4 times. Then press the button 3 then 4 then 5 times? The LEd on teh box didnt light anyway, so something isnt right. Last edited by Criticalmass; Apr 30th, 2012 at 20:36. |

After you take out the fuses, if the engine is cranking but no start, next step is to take a wire and fit it from the battery (+) to the start/stop solenoid. When you energize the solenoid, there's should be a "click". This is a temporary solution... you must open the bonnet and fit/remove the wire every time you start/stop the engine. Let me know if it works. |
