RE: 850 Alarms & Immobilisers
Simon,
My Volvo key is just a normal looking Volvo key albeit the head of the key is grey rubber unlike my old 850 keys, both of which were black plastic. I know that the old ford keys have a red insert but I ain't seen it on Volvo keys. Maybe my car doesn't have a transponder immobiliser but the destruction manual says it is. Also, the immobiliser definately isn't controlled by the alarm because if I sit in the car and set the alarm with the key fob, I can still start the car with the key. SO unless I ain't got an immobiliser it must be a transponder. Weird! Regards Andy |

My mistake then. It isnt obvious by looking at the keys that they have a chip. Unless the grey rubber is the giveaway. My keys without a chip are also black plastic.

RE: 850 Alarms & Immobilisers
What year is your car Simon?
I thought all 1995 models onwards were immobilised as standard? Maybe the immobiliser is connected to the alarm on your car and is therefore only activated when the alarm is set. Of course, I could be mistaken. However, if it isn't a transponder then I fail to see how my car can be immobilised. Regards Andy |

RE: 850 Alarms & Immobilisers
My car was registered in January '95 and doesnt have an immobiliser. I think it was mid '95 they started fitting them. Probably at the same time they fitted side airbags and explosive tensioners for the seatbelts neither of which my car has.

If the car is locked, alarmed and the fob doesn't work - unlock the doors with the key, open door, set the alarm off, open bonnet, go into fuse box and take out fuse No 6 and the alarm will stop - start car, drive home - job done
