If the car is still in warranty & is approaching the end of said warranty, it can be worth going back to the dealer for some "good will" in case Something Bad happens just outside of warranty. Quite a few years ago now I had an out-of-warranty engine rebuild from Subaru Australia for the cost of the 100k-km service I was needing anyway, because the dealer went to Subaru Oz on my behalf.
I say this 'cos a car bought from Volvo Oz wouldn't be in warranty at 6 years, but given what little I know, it might be there. In most other circumstances you're better off if you can find a good independent mechanic, and if concerned about OEM quality bits let them know & they can source whatever they need to source. The guy I know & trust has been servicing my wife's Holden Commodore using OEM bits since we bought it (excepting the free 1500km checkup/service), and when it was still within the factory warranty period he wasn't charging any more than the "super duper duper cheap factory-subsidised fixed price!" services at a dealer ... the difference being that the car always came back just as perfectly clean as I handed it over, and I knew none of the work had been skipped (I attribute carelessness/rushing and not malice with dealers on that score). |
