I think you underestimate what those hoses can course - They don't have to be collapsed - one of them can have gone "soft" - so that it takes the pressure (when braking) instead of sending it to the caliper.

The most easy check you can do in 2 minutes - is to check if they are of same manufactorer/style? - Then ask the wife, girl/boyfriend, nabour, friend, whoever you can get to step on the brake pedal while you feel (literally) on the hoses - I don't say you can feel if there's a fault - But inspect and inspect closely if there's differences when pressure is on.

Thanks CVS I will check them too. Not too costly to replace either!

Thats a good call though I'm a bit confused. The Idler or Relay arm is the only place where I can see perceptible movement if I move the road wheel side to side. But I don't understand how a leak in the steering box can destroy the rubber in the idler arm as it is on the other side of the car. Are we talking of the same component? Do you mean Pitman Arm?

Brian
Oops - sorry - just checked my car - I meant the tie rod (on the steering box side)

I don't like to leave threads unresolved especially when they have had helpful and constructive replies. Today I finally got an MOT on my Swede. The issue was indeed the caliper and I had it removed three times before it stopped being silly!
So now I can enjoy the summer with a spot of cruising and crack on with the Jensen restoration.

Thanks All

Brian

Glad you got it sorted Brian,

one other thing that is common that will cause the car to pull a hell of a lot under braking and is very hard to spot is a broken crossmember. When the tube that holds the lower wishbone bolt breaks away it will cause pulling under braking and is very hard to find. You need a very big bar to pull on the suspension to show it up.
