Im not 100% what you mean by having to have 3000RPM gear change rule. Its totally up to you when you change the gear so how are you measuring it? I change the gears between 2000rpm and 6300rpm depending on the road situation and my driving mood style so I wouldnt get suggested by that...
or am I missing something?

Dunno if that helps?
yes it does help. My car is at 3k at 30mph in 3rd gear. Just doesn't make sense but its changed since they did this work - anyone know if there is any plausible mechanical explanation?

check the gearbox serial number against the one recorded at volvo , any dealer should give it to you .

Is the car faster than before?

Is the clutch still slipping? Clutch slipping = engine revs increase when pressing the pedal, but car doesn't accelerate accordingly. You aren't being very clear whether your clutch is still slipping.

If no to both questions, it sounds like your car has been returned to you with a different gearbox LOL.

I think your missing the speed point. He is going from a reference point of say 2k rpm in 2nd at 30 mph he changes to 3rd. Now his car is at 3k rpm at 30 in 2nd when he is changing to 3rd.

So its revving higher for the same speed than it was.

Thing is, though, it's the gearbox and differential which affect that. The clutch shouldn't make any difference, it's 1-to-1. Unless it's slipping, which you say it isn't. #confused

When the clutch is engaged, the vehicle speed and engine speed are locked together. the ratio of engine speed to vehicle speed can only be changed by changing gearbox ratios (cogs and gears), diff ratios, and wheel sizes.

If nothing changed in gearbox cogs, diff ratios or wheel sizes, then the ONLY thing that can cause the engine speed to be now different to what it was previously is the clutch slipping. Everything else is mechanically locked, the clutch is the only thing that can allow the engine speed to go higher than it was in the past.

If the clutch IS slipping, then it will burn out pretty fast.... go back to the shop and ask them to test drive the car with you in it.

Ah ok, gotcha, just got confused for a moment

To me its simple - if before you had 30MPH with 2k revs, and now you have 30MPH with 3k revs on the same gear, its either:
a) your clutch is slipping constantly
b) your gearbox/final ratio magically changed while car was in service

Cant think of other explanations, seriously.
