its also not there on the 2.4 engine, but theres a moulding for it, draft excluder shall be fitted, And the parts for the "snorkle" feed duct taped up as they rattle (part 13 in your pic is two parts on mine)

I'm sure there are better materials you can use for a gasket.. but draught excluder was all I had.

Having said that, this is the really thick stuff but it squishes down in such a way that it doesn't prevent the air filter tray from seating home properly.

I have some window seals left aswell, I may test it just for sake of trying. Im sure though my car never had anything there so Im driving oblivious for over 2.5 years now...
Did you notice change in sound maybe? Ie less of intake noise or more directed "woosh" ?

Ever so slight reduction in growl was noticed, but that would be expected.

I need to give it week to mitigate any placebo effect, but it seems to have restored a little grunt at lower RPM.

I can confirm that after 2 days of "ECU adjustment time" this cheap gasket has made a substantial difference in smoothness...and this huge presence of torque. Todays drive home was fantastic despite most of it being jams...

No way these cars should be running without any form of gasket there... If yours is missing you needed to replace it asap.

Combined with my new TCV from a couple of weeks ago, the car is simply flying...and the low down torque is simply amusing.

Starting to understand why a stage 1 remap almost guarantees clutch slip..

Sorry, Im not trying to p*ss on your parade but are you sure gasket was the only thing that changed? Like, you didnt clean/replace the filter "by the way" or new TCV didnt just finish the prolonged learn procedure or something? No doubts I will be trying that myself this weekend as its an easy way to test it myself (now I am really super curious), but I am honestly surprised it made such an impact on your car. I have never had any such problems (rough rpms etc) and my car have never had that gasket, plus I have only 1 screw at the filter (the other one was always missing) so never actually thought sealing that area is very relevant...

Nope, I've done nothing else (other than TCV 2/3 weeks ago). Same air filter.

The fact that the engine noise has muffled slightly tells me everything I need to know

Its like doing the hoovering with sliding "suction reducer" door slightly open on the tube... it reduces the vaccum going to the carpet.

You can't push two pieces of hard plastic together and expect it to be air tight, it HAS to have a gasket and the fact that Volvo put one there in the first place means (to me at least) that the car cannot be running properly without it.

I'm genuinely over the moon with the difference it's made... I was starting to get disheartend by the amount of "regular" cars that were keeping up with it.. but not anymore.

I can see how it would have made a difference if it's meant to be there but wasn't, it's designed to be an airtight system that wasn't air tight, you're essentially losing boost, you only need a small leak to make a big difference to how the turbo behaves.

I'll be checking mine tonight to see if mine looks like it should have one!

EDIT - Just asked me uncle for a part number at Volvo and he says there's nothing for it in the latest VIDA either. Guessing it's apart of the box assembly unit....

+1 to above, it just doesnt exist in Vida. I even checked for 2.4i and FL engiones, its just not listed anywhere. Looks to me it was never a "separate part" but I cant get it why its a standalone part on that diagram (tascaparts?).

t5r90210 - good comparison with vacuum, I buy that. However, I must add that when I first noticed I am missing 1 screw at the airbox tray (literally first day I got the car) , I had my concerns if that is "ok". But on closer inspection it seemed that whole unit is sealed tightly anyway because of excessive rubber gasket present on actual FILTER unit, so it looked like it can work no matter if screws are there or not, let alone the extra gasket I didnt even know existed. Makes me really wonder now how come you had a visible side-effects of that gasket missing where me (and I bet a lot of other people) never experienced it.
Still, a major thumbs up for discovering it and taking matters into your own hands! glad you got it sorted.
Will post my observations after I try with mine.

Yep,

Just pinched some nice expensive tape/foam from the lab at work so will give mine a go later

Good find anyway, I've got no running issues at the moment so will be interesting to give it a go.

Having said that, I've not even checked mine yet and can't say I noticed last time I did my air filter so will have to check if mine is even missing
