Thanks for your reply SiRobb. I got home from work at 6:45 and it started after to 5 second cranks.

I've been keeping it to 5 second or so cranks to avoid starter burn out, and I'm hoping to get it to a specialist on Saturday for a diagnostic.

I got the car to RM Motor Services in penzance earlier, and it looks like it just needed the fuel pump recalibration for cold conditions?

I'll put more details of any codes and what exactly was done on here later, but all the glow plugs are OK and the rail pressure is fine

Please do. Particularly the pump recalibration thing. It's a new one for me.

Bummer, I got plenty of printouts from them but not for what exactly was done. I remember I was reading through it and it was along the lines of improving the fuel feed in cold conditions effective to -60 degrees.

Shame I don't have it as it would have been interesting to find out more

Hmmmm......

Are you sure you have a D5 and not the 2.5TDi?

Definitely a D5. 163 euro 3.

I'll report back in the week if it's better

Sounds like the blurb on a bottle of fuel additive.

In that case your mechanic is feeding you a large portion of BS unfortunately.
The fuel pump function you describe can be performed but you are nowhere near the starting temperatures to make it worthwhile.
It's for 0°C to -60°C

How much did he charge for this 1 minute procedure that won't help?

What he showed me came off his volvo system which he gave me the printout of fault codes.

I accept you probably are right but all I can do is wait and see.

I paid their standard diagnostic charge of £40 so at least nothing extra

That's fair enough but it's a shame they didn't focus on the most likely reasons for a poor starting D5.
If you don't have your own diagnostics, the leak test suggested by Brendan would be a great place to begin.
