Phandy:

Re: Fuel gauge
Are you saying that yours never worked, or you had the same problem as mine?
The nonVolvo garage have taken out the fuel sender unit and they say its working.
(it's the second time i left it in - they said it was a loose wire last time hmmm)
They think its related to the actual fuel marker and now are going to replace the instrument panel ????

Re: Solenoid
The rattle sounds like this (my rattle has a shorter sound).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfJwR_U5r2E
If you disconnect like in the video and the noise stops then its 99% a VVT pully problem. (someone else on the forum gave that figure.) Search for VVT pully on forum.

Sorry for the late reply, a lightning strike took out out telephone lines/internet/TV...you name it. Just getting back.

I purchased my car a few days ago, and the previous owner had a sticker over the fuel gauge with tank capacity as the gauge never worked. When I purchased it, the garage had a quick look and a wire was in two pieces, they simply soldered it back on and the fuel gauge works. Unfortunately, I was not given anymore detailed info.

Thanks Gamesadditct. Will check this out. The car is going in for a general health check next Thursday so I will mention this. I will check the oil as per your suggestion tomorrow.

Hi, will do. I should know by next weekend.

Quite an interesting video on Volvo VVT. I realise a different year and model, but the principles are similar. So much easier when you have taken the engine out of the car.

Hi Gamesaddict does your rattle sounds like this:

https://youtu.be/hMZ1_yLV4yY

You will have to turn your sound to max volume.

I took this recording of my V40 2003 this morning. The rattle only starts at idle and appears after a minute or so at idle, lasts for maybe half a minute then stops, then starts a minute or so later.

As soon as I drive off the rattle stops.
