Thanks for that.

I was told it comes with 1 unchipped key.

Kings Volvo are who I use for work and I ordered the part via them. They only asked for the car's reg. Due to the sheer bolts and a lack of time, Kings are coming to the car and will do the work. Best to leave it to them to get it working as its currently been sat in a public car park for a week! I just want it home safe and sound asap.

The key inserts and turns to just before position 1 and will not go any further, no matter what I do. I have tried the spare key also and it does the exact same.

As a result I think a new ignition barrel is required. Does anyone know if its just a case of getting a new ignition barrel (assuming its supplied with a new set of keys) or is there any coding etc required to make the car go?
Isn't this the problem where a small metal tab in the lock breaks off and jams the barrel which means that no key will fully turn the lock ?

In which case you might want to read this post at the link below instead of buying a new lock

ALL FIXED

The new part came with the key. The existing keys also worked so the new unit was coded to the car.

The sheer bolts were a pain and glad I called out Kings Volvo as I would have got stuck messing with those or use brute force and breaking something else. New lock went in, as mentioned, tested with all keys without issue.

Fwiw it took about 1.5 hrs to do by someone who knows what they are doing.

Thanks again for all the help and advice and the useful links.

Purely out of interest and to compare with the figures quoted to forum members over the last few years, what was the final bill from your Volvo dealer?

Kings Volvo are independent specialists, not a dealership.(Most ex MRG Volvo techs are there now and its run by one of the old MRG managers). This team of individuals have been looking after my cars alongside Tim Williams for almost 10 years.

Part was around £231.
Labour : £450 (This is far more than what it would have cost had the car been at Kings Volvo. They travelled up from Westbury to Nottingham. Now considering the car has been stranded in a public car park for 2 weeks, the costs any other garage or dealer would charge or even a recovery truck etc, I think its fine - to have the job done accurately, efficiently without any damage by people who know these cars and should anything have gone wrong, would also be in the best position to deal with it).

If you're happy with the result getting the "R" back to working order again is all that matters.

To have a key coded to the car is £140.
you should have ordered the steering lock to suit your original keys , it takes about 2 days longer .. Now you will have non matching keys . no programming needed when changing the mechanical lock . The key that comes with the lock is only a skeleton for test purposes it will not start the car ...

Nope, the lock took a few days to arrive and was coded (I assumed i chose the non coded option) so all works with original keys.
