Precisely my thoughts on a daily basis, "What would I be doing coming the other way?". Saved my skin (and metal) a few times.

That is a perfect 'thought for the day'.

And here is the big but.... most drivers have the 'it won't happen to me' or 'Im a good driver i will be able to avoid an oncoming car' mentality. they may be able to avoid an oncoming car but what about that truck which is the same width as the road or the stray cow out for a walk?

Spare a thought for some of the other reasons for speed limits which have nothing to do with road safety, such as quality of life for those who have to live near the roads on which cars speed.

My own village has a 30mph limit and the various planning decisions such as proximity of houses to the road, requirements for footpaths etc, are taken as if that limit would be enforced. In reality of course speed limits (around here anyway) are never enforced outside 'core hours' of, say, 8am to 8pm. So we are unable to sleep with windows open, owing to the incessant bursts of noise from cars roaring past at motorway speeds.

Even in daytime, although the police operate the occasional speed trap, it does little good. I walked through the village this afternoon and, whilst there was no serious danger, the enjoyment was largely spoiled by the constant visual and audible distraction of speeding cars.

I've been clobbered by Thames Valley Cops a few times, they love their speed traps. I live in a side street that runs parallel with a main road that has both traffic lights and speed bumps so guess what happens in my street? It is the short cut rat run. It's straight and on a hill so you can see from end to end which lulls drivers into a false sense of safety. Taxi's, Pizza delivery cars, Sport bike terrorists and the local boy racers all take great advantage of this. I'm waiting until there's a fatality. I have bought this subject with the local councellor but as usual once the front door shuts the thought is erased and forgotten. Just gunna have to be careful eh?

We are all referring to the speed limit, we need to bear in mind it is the maximum limit not a target speed.
There are a few places where there is a minimum speed limit but these are distinguishable by the sign being blue with white numerals (extra I-spy points for these as they are quite rare)

Hi,

And there I was thinking that the biggest killer of people on roads was inappropriate walking out in-front of moving vehicles without a t055 as to whether there was any traffic or not..

Or was it the inane cyclists on dark bikes on dark roads wearing dark clothes and having no lights or reflectors anywhere and playing chicken with traffic?

You learn something every day!
