Well, certainly tell the DVLA! The UK LPG Register is something I'd never heard of, but I've just checked their interweb thingie, and Bingo! I'm on it!

Valve lube system is not necessarily needed - it depends on the car, but most older (ie: pre-Ford) Volvos do not in fact need a lube system.

Yes, do tell your insurers, and I have to disagree - I found my premiums actually went down!

Drivers of LPG cars are apparently a better risk than average, as they tend to be older, drive more sensibly, look after their cars better and keep their cars longer.

As with all things to do with insurance, make sure you shop around. Not all insurers are the same.

Cheers

At the time it was the RAC after Norwich Onions (now Aviva) said they wouldn't do it.

Currently have a multicar thingie with Admiral (excellent value - an S70 and a V70, two named drivers on each, plus full business use on the V70, plus third party on any other car either of us drive). £350 all in.

They do ask about the LPG, and they've never indicated that it adds any sort of increased premium.

Cheers

I have no problems with this car i have owned it since 2007 , on average i get between 18-22 miles/gallon around town. This car has never let me down since i bought it but in the current climate i thought i should down size to a V40 to get more miles/gallon out of it and then convert it to LPG...

Just on general principles you should keep the trouble free car you have and continue to extract the value from it. The urge to spend a bunch of money up front in the expectation of saving money in the longer term usually doesn't bear up under a careful analysis. One has to think that such plans usually arise from a baseless hope of making some bold stroke to improve one's situation.

The psychological energy required to research and analyze the LPG possibilities might be better employed in planning ahead for what to replace the V70 with, when it wears out or when you are so tired of it that you have just got to get another car.
