They advise this because if you would apply too much sealent the pump and/or waterchannels can become blocked by the excess. So if you use it like you should with just a very thin layer no harm can be done.
I personally think that the major amount of leaking pumps is caused by not cleaning the contactsurface on the engine meticulously before fitting. Over torqueing the bolts or not torqueing them evenly in steps is another cause.

Regarding the water pump propeller, the service book shows that it was fitted with two types: a 'squareish' like one (e.g. 1.7) and a round propeller one (for the 2.0). The one I changed on mine had the squarish looking one which is of metal while the one i fitted had the round one which was made of plastic. Cleaning of the surface as mentioned is important. I used a thin layer of graphite grease on the gasket paper and not a drop since...

Well, 360dood has had his fun and has the pump off the motor (the type B pump in the picture). I have a replacement on order even though there are several blocks in the garden with the same pump fitted. As we plan to keep this engine for a while it is better to fit a complete new unit.
