I have seen a dynamo side alternator install on another forum that uses the original dynamo bracket.....These are typically LHD cars but hopefully with a small enough alternator this will still be possible on my RHD.
Anyway, I'll be down to the scrappies tomorrow with my tape measure..... Cheers Gerry

Russ..... Having looked at some pics of 1800s and seen the servo position perhaps I've got to revise my suggestions. I'd like to see a pic of your set up too but if you have the early fittings which places the servo ahead of the washer pump and bottle there could well be a problem. It depends on whether you want it to all look original. If you don't, you could possibly move the servo back on a new bracket and also reposition the bottle. Moving the servo back will allow you to reuse the new pipes. A small alternator, swivelled right down might do the job. I'm used to more room in the Amazon!

pics of 1800 engine bay
Hi Guys
Thanks for all your suggestions but an alternator will not fit dizzy side in my 1800 engine bay and retain the existing servo location. I have just piped up all the new brake and clutch line in CuNi and anyone whose done this will understand its best done with the engine out (I take my hat off to those who did it with the engine in). Plus the water bottle will need resiting/replaced and the fan thermo switch and my dinky housing for it will also need resiting. All in all a lot of extra work and as resonably as possible I am trying to retain a stock bay. I have attached two pics one of the area on the dizzy side and the alternator mounting ear can be seen also. The distance A is about 3.5", take off the clearance and mounting centers and your probably between 2.75-3". The other pic is the area next to the manifold. I have the front mounting point(a bolt is currently half way in in the pic) so no need for a aftermarket bracket. The space is larger and an alternator should fit this side. There's no big deal about putting an alternator on the manifold side... it works fine in an Amazon. I suppose there may be more of a problem with heat soak in the more cramped 1800 engine bay... two solutions suggest themselves: (1) bend up a heat shield out of some sheet steel to mount between the alternator and manifold, (2) get the highest rated alternator you can fit in the space so you're using it well under its maximum capacity.

Gerry
Sorry about slowness on returning to VOC site. The alternator was bought new (ouch, £100) it is a Nippon Denso and I believe it is a 111048 and bought from Middletons in Manchester. It delivers 35A and has a built in regulator. As you can see I had to fabricate a mounting bracket. Hope that this is helpful.
