I've pulled the leads on each coil, and I suspect you are right Steve, it probably is a coil. Mine are all Volvo and look original to the car, but part code 9125601. I've just ordered a used one off eBay for £10. I guess its the sort of part that could go any time, and its worth buying a few and maybe keeping them in the car?

Hopefully this will fix it, I'll let you know.

my replacement pencil coil arrived yesterday, held up in the xmas post.

It has fixed it, so thanks for your help. It wasn't an injector, as my mechanic told me. I could have wasted a lot of money down that path.

Is it advisable to buy a couple of used ones off eBay now while they are available, in case others fail, or is that likely a waste of money?

Just as I thought, a faulty coil. Now as I suggested earlier, that's VERY poor diagnosis and advice from your mechanic, so make a mental note to never go there again, as you said, you could have wasted a lot of time and money. In fact morally (if not legally) he owes you for the cost of his previous attempt IMHO.

Yes, worth getting a spare or two, these do fail over time and if one has gone the others may not be far behind. However, if it were me I'd buy new ones, as used ones may also be towards the end of their life and may prove false economy. Just my view...

thanks Luxobarge. If I were to get new ones, would aftermarket be okay? New Volvo ones will be v expensive. I was thinking used Volvo ones might be better than aftermarket new ones, or is that not the case?

If it were me I'd be quite happy with aftermarket ones.

I too have a similar problem in my 2001 s60 2.3 t5, I’ve replaced all coils and spark plugs, fuel filter, maf sensor and both lambda sensors and the misfire remains in cylinder #1. I’ve tried taking off the connections to both injectors and coils and engine note only never changed in no1 and now it won’t start and a strong smell of fuel which I’ve now found to be fuel filling up in no1 where the injector sits. I’m really struggling now!

Check the wiring to the injectors, it's known to go brittle and expose the copper wire or even break - you may have to remove the black concertina sheathing to check thoroughly. It's quite possible that you "taking off the connectors" has disturbed the wiring and made it worse.

And would that cause the fuel build up in the #1 cylinder?

It’s not the wiring. It first started by saying misfire in cylinder 4 or 5 and sometimes both together then it was 3 or 1 and 3 and now it’s just 1 so god knows I really am stuck and now it won’t drive so can’t get it to a garage.
