Cheshired5 or anybody, I have the same message on my 52-plate D5 and I don't have a VIDA. My message ONLY appears if I exceed about 2,300 revs.

And it's surely just coincidence, but also noticed that cruise control now seems to have trouble maintaining the speed on hills.

Any ideas please?
Most likely an air leak/restriction or a sticking VNT.
Initially, follow the air pipes from the air box to behind the engine and you'll see a pipe like below.
It can split and/or go soft and collapse in under acceleration affecting airflow.

Also check the intercooler for oily residue and distortion to its (should be) straight sides.

Many thanks for that. I've had a good look and feel along that pipe, can't detect any faults and it feels supple and healthy, but I guess a hairline split wouldn't be easy to spot. Intercooler looks straight but a bit mucky so maybe that is where my problem lies. Service history is huge/complete and no mention of intercooler replacement - 240K miles.
I'm no great shakes with a spanner so it's going to be a trip to the local garage now, but at least I'll have an idea in advance about what the problem could be, for which I'm very grateful.
By the way, I've only just realised that the "Engine service required" message doesn't come up with the car stationary, however high I take the revs. So load maybe has something to do with it. Does that tell you anything more?
